Super Bowl 2009 - Predictions

Lions beat Dolphins to finish 19-0 season.

Oh, I wish. I wish.

'Boys over the Chargers.

This weeks Sign of the Apocalypse (apologies to SI): On Monday night I saw a promo from NBC announcing next years Super Bowl is on NBC. Thanks NBC! I’ll just tune my TV to NBC now and leave it there for a year.

Pack over the Pats

Minnesota over New England.

Tavaris Jackson outplays Brady to complete a Viking Perfect Season.

It could happen.

Pats, Colts, Giants and Pack will be there near the end, but all will falter.

After Tony Romo gets his nuts cut off in a boating accident and regains his focus,

Cowboys beat Chargers in XLIII

Yeah, and Huey Lewis will win the best album Grammy.

complete homer pick, but it could happen - Packers over Chargers

Dolphins go 19-0 and we spend the next 30 years hearing about the '72 Dolphins AND the '09 Dolphins popping champagne corks.

Also, they sign Mercury Morris to a token contract so that he will never die! BWAHAHAHA!

… unless…

The world pays me ONE MILLION DOLLARS!

That’s Ok, let Merc & Co. have their memories. They don’t bother me at all.

'Skins might not even have a coach by then.

Eli won’t crash his motorcycle without a helmet, nor is he likely to have appendicitis. Those two issues with Ben were pretty much solely responsible for the Steelers struggles the year after their Superbowl win.

I think this is what you meant to say, but I’m not positive. Let me know if I misinterpreted.

First off, fantastic write-ups. I agree with the vast majority of what you wrote, though much of it hadn’t occurred to me until I read your post. But as to the aging NFC East, I don’t see the Giants as an old team at all; I’d actually call them a young team. Sure, there’s Toomer and Strahan, but hey, Toomer’s draft class included Terry Glenn, Marvin Harrison and Terrell Owens, so it’s not inconceivable he returns. Despite that, let’s assume both Toomer and Strahan are gone. Here’s the (not exhaustive; who cares about emergency QB) current team makeup with the ages they will be September 4th, 2008:

QB: 27 (4 yrs) Eli Manning

RB: 26 (3 yrs) Brandon Jacobs
RB: 28 (4 yrs) Derrick Ward
RB: 22 (1 yr) Ahmad Bradshaw
FB: 27 (3 yrs) Madison Hedgecock

WR: 31 (8 yrs) Plaxico Burress
WR: (Roster hole; free agent or draft)
WR: 23 (1 yr) Steve Smith

LT: 27 (5 yrs) David Diehl
LG: 29 (7 yrs) Rich Seubert
C : 31 (8 yrs) Shaun O’Hara
RG: 26 (4 yrs) Chris Snee
RT: 29 (7 yrs) Kareem McKenzie

DE: 26 (5 yrs) Osi Umenyiora
DT: 24 (2 yrs) Barry Cofield
DT: 31 (8 yrs) Fred Robbins
DE: 25 (3 yrs) Justin Tuck

OLB: (Roster hole; free agent or draft)
MLB: 29 (7 yrs) Antonio Pierce
OLB: 28 (5 yrs) Kawika Mitchell

CB: 25 (1 yr) Aaron Ross
S : 26 (4 yrs) Gibril Wilson
S : 25 (3 yrs) James Butler
CB: 26 (3 yrs) Corey Webster

I assume that Mathius Kiwanuka (25, 2 yrs) will be re-converted back from LB to nis natural DE position, where he will take over Tuck’s role as Tuck takes over for a vacated Michael Strahan. That leaves a hole at LB; Reggie Torbor (27, 4 yrs) filled in great for the second half of the season after Kiwi went down, but he’s not really a starter.

I forgot about OLB Gerris Wilkinson (25, 2 yrs) who should and almost certainly will be the starter next year.

Nice right up and I agree. This is a team that looks more likely to improve a little. Doesn’t mean they will even make it back to the Superbowl, but they should challenge the Cowboys for the Division and I think they will take it.

Oh please, it’s obvious which team will win the superbowl

The one that hires Chuck Norris to play for them

On balance they aren’t extraordinarily old, but my comment was more directed to the fact that they are old at a few critical positions. The aforementioned Toomer and Strahan are critical pieces, as are Sam Madison, R.W. McQuarters and Jeff Feagles. Those are all key positions to the style of football the Giants play and while they may not lose them all, they are in the phase where they bring diminishing returns. If they come back with holes at DE or CB or with a rookie Punter it will be hard for them to repeat this years Super Bowl. Of course you will note that I picked them to win the division, so it’s not like I expect them to be a geriatric group.

Hey, from what I can see, Feagles is only 2/3rds of the way through his career so far.

I agree on the rest, but I don’t think McQuarters would get the starting job if he returned anyway. Steve Smith looks ready to take over for Toomer. Sinorice Moss is really fast, I have no clue if he can stay healthy and make the catches, but I have hopes.

Strahan will be a tough loss, but if youngster Mathias Kiwanuka returns next year as least the Line backers will be strengthened.

Tuck, Cofield, Robbins & Umenyiora back a very good front four.

McQuarters was nothing special this year. Madison would be a tough to replace loss but Butler & Ross impressed me by the end of the year and should add a boost in the backfield.

You gotta believe. This is the year all of Matt Millen’s strategizing pays off, big! Patiently, painstakingly, through years of study, effort and careful selection, he’s crafted the team that will bring back the glory years . . .

Nah . . . I don’t have it in me to continue. There’s only so muc stompin’ on that one heart can take. :frowning:

Fair enough. McQuarters was never a starting CB – he was always the nickelback – but your point still stands.

I find it very Freudian that I didn’t list the TE position.

He’s also the starting punt returner, which teams are starting to put quite a bit of value on.
