Jack in the Box would have been a local/regional commercial… they don’t have them everywhere.
People seem to be missing the point… Seinfeld is a well known car collector (Conan is not). Leno is a well known car collector… who has been known to swipe things away from his competitors at the last minute.
Sorry if I’m out of the loop, but who does the narration at the end of the Chevy end-of-the-world commercial? It sounds like Clooney, but it’s too short to tell. Anyone know?
Yep. I think it was meant to pre-empt a national ad. The station probably meant to mute the national ad, but messed up and muted everything. The ad following the JitB ad was at normal sound volume, tho.
The way they did it…maybe 1 out of 10* people know or care that Leno and Seinfeld are “car guys”. My way, maybe 7 out of 10* people know the Seinfeld/Newman rivalry, and remember the commercial fondly.
I have to admit, I was watching the game with my wife and a friend, and none of us saw a single ad that was remotely interesting or remarkable. That Detroit ad (was it Dodge?) was the only one that even pinged our radar. This is perhaps the worst batch of Super Bowl commercials in recent memory. Weird list of celebrities they were digging up. Apollo Ono? Seinfeld? The Darkness? What year are we in?
You’d also think they’d give some credit to the government that saved them. In any case, this is a rare case where Eminem (who did the Detroit commercial last year) did a better job than Clint Eastwood. Last year was great, this one was a mess.
Interesting seeing some old classic cartoon characters in the MetLife “Everyone” ad - Besides the Peanuts gang, I spotted Scooby and the gang, Richie Rich, Mr Magoo, Elroy Jetson, Speedy Gomzalez, Pepi LePew, Atom Ant, Penelope Pitstop, The Slag Brothers and The Gruesome Twosome (all from Wacky Races), He-Man, one of the Transformers (Optimus Prime? Don’t know the characters well enough), Sherman and Peabody, Underdog, Grape Ape, Magilla Gorilla, Quick Draw McGraw… there were a lot of classic characters in there!
Squarely aimed at a Boomer demographic, beyond a doubt.
I think it’s odd that they keep going with the rebuilding America theme when they are the only Detroit manufacturer that’s owned by a foreign corporation.
Last year’s Eminem commercial was stronger at getting the message across and less talky. It was also very successful and Chrysler was lazy to try and recycle it.
One more point. It would have been more effective to just put up the tag line at the end instead of then posting the logos for the various brands. “Imported from Detroit” It strengthens the tag, and those who weren’t aware of it previously would seek out the name, prolonging the conversation.
Yep, and he also does the Campbells Soup ads. I do think he sounds a lot like Clooney, so much so that I told my wife some time back that Clooney was doing the Campbells Soup commercials.
I was wrong, and I’m not too small to admit it.
(When Toy Story first came out, and the first previews were airing for it, I was pretty sure it was Clooney’s voice saying, “To infinity, and beyond!” So I’ve had this Clooney/Allen voice mixup going on for a long time, folks.)
Did none of you guys see the Budweiser commercial where they flash-mobbed a Rec League hockey game up in Port Credit (Ontario) with fans? It was awesome. The teams had no idea what was happening and the looks on their faces are priceless.
(It looks like it was only aired in Canada - too bad, you Americans missed out.)
I think the Weego beer commercial was the best of the lot. There were several dog commercials last night, but that commercial was especially rich in doggy cuteness.
I give points to the Chevy end-of-the-world commercial solely for using a Barry Manilow song. If you listen to the words, it wasn’t really an appropriate choice, but I’m the only one who listens to the words anyway.
I’m always up for a new E-trade baby commercial, that was good. Other than that, really a weak year.
Oh, and Clint, if you’re still working and not dancing on the edge of the grave as I previously thought, you need to get started doing those Dark Tower movies.
