Did you know that of the three 80s Super Bowls that were played in the Superdome (XV-Oakland/Philly, XX-Chicago/New England, and XXIV-San Francisco/Denver [for the 1989 season]), the winning score went up by 28 points over all three games, while the score for the losing side was only 10 each time? In other words, the winning score for all three champions over all three losers was a combined 128-30.
Also, the last two of the three winning sides in these games were of the NFC (the first was of the AFC). Moreover, all three of the champions in these games were the designated visitors.
Sam Walton was the unsung hero of the 1969 New York Jets victory in Superbowl III, though he was benched and did not play. Dave Herman, an offensive guard, moved to replace him at right tackle, coming up against Bubba Smith. Herman’s inexperience at the position, coupled with the team’s regard for Smith, led the Jets to run all their running plays away from that side, where Colts DT Ordell Braase was suffering from a back injury (and which he didn’t reveal until after the game). The injury limited his effectiveness, allowing Matt Snell to run for solid gains and make Namath’s passing all the more effective.
To add on to what I said to begin: the first two of those 3 80s SBs that were played in the
Superdome were the first and last of NBC’s 80s broadcasts to have the Proud N (the middle one being, of course, #17 in 1983 between Miami and Washington).
Who is the only player in NFL history to “play” in five consecutive Super Bowls?Gale Gilbert. The reason play was in quotes was because he was a back-up quarterback and sat on the bench for those games.
What makes the Super Bowl coin toss unique, at least as far as Las Vegas is concerned?
It is the only thing that has nothing to do with athletic performance for which a Nevada sports book can accept a bet. They can post odds on, say, the Academy Awards or the next Presidential election all they want, but they can’t take bets on anything that is not a sporting event - except for the Super Bowl coin toss.
Which QB holds the record for most passing yards gained in a single SB game?
Which QB is second for most passing yards gained in a single SB game?
Which QB is third for most passing yards gained in a single SB game?
Kurt Warner is the answer to all 3
Just noticed this from seeing what Washington did to Denver in #22 (this from the Redskins Super Bowl DVD release): Washington came within 3 points of doing to Denver what Chicago did to Washington in Week 4 of the '85 season, and came within 4 points of doing to Denver what Chicago did to New England in #20 (the first game was 45-10, Chicago over Washington, and the other game was 46-10, Chicago over New England).
The team wearing white jerseys has beaten the team wearing colored jerseys in 8 of the last 9 Super Bowls.
