Super Bowl XLV

Pick me up off the floor.

You’ve got to be kidding me. Barely survived? The Steelers won by 5! Even if on the last real play, they didn’t get the first down, the Jets would still have had to drive at least 80 yards in 1:30 with no time outs. How is that “barely”?

The Steelers MO is to build a big lead and then run the ball. They grind out the clock instead of getting first downs. It’s ugly, and they appear to let the other team back in it, but that’s the system…and it works.

Which is just about the same situation as the end of the Bears - Packers game. You can’t say the Packers squeaked by the Bears without noting that the Steelers played with fire against both the Ravens and the Jets. They probably should have lost the game to the Ravens if not for the epic collapse and butterfingered WRs and they were as close to blowing a big lead in the championship game as the Packers were.

There’s tons of $$$money$$$ to be made from people losing bets.

My prediction: Green Bay 35 Pittsburgh 24.

I almost forgot. I’m taking off tomorrow and likely won’t be spending much time checking here, so I want to take care of this now. Packers v. Steelers. Double or nothing. What’s the double?

I’m cool with just about anything, so if there’s anything you covet (signed copy of Ben’s mugshot?, framed copies of James Harrison’s domestic assault arrest records? :stuck_out_tongue: ) let me know.

So in other words, if the Ravens had made less mistakes and the Steelers made more, the Ravens would have won. Wow. How insightful. I see you adhere to the the John Madden school of analysis.

That wasn’t his point at all. Of course the Steelers won, Omni was pointing out HOW they won, that they beat the Ravens simply because the Ravens shot themselves in the foot in the second half of the game. He was pointing out the quality of the win, not that they won.

No it isn’t. The Packers didn’t change gears and go to a running game, the Bears just started shutting down their offense. Green Bay really didn’t do much of anything in the second half, and they were especially flat in the 4th quarter with several 3 and outs (and several incomplete passes on 2nd and 3rd downs).

I’ll say Steelers by 4, 24-20. Rooting for the Packers, though.

Steelers 45
Packers 6

For what it is worth:

Reality: Packers made it to the Super Bowl and had the #2 scoring defense in the NFL.

Reality: Bears win by 3 on a field goal with 2 minutes left and the Packers commit a record 18 penalties.

Reality: Packers absolutely trounce the Giants 45-17.

Reality: The Packers dominate the Falcons 48-21.

Packers 21 Bears 14.

Just in case anyone hasn’t been paying attention and think Dio might know what he’s talking about.

Oh and Dio, I don’t think I’ve seen you pay off the wager you made here. Did I miss it? I eagerly await your reply.

That’s what I’m saying. His point was that the Ravens only lost because they made mistakes (e.g. butterfinger receivers). Well no shit. That’s how professional teams lose games- they make mistakes. He’s trying to handwave them away as if they don’t count. Why? Because for some reason, he thinks “well normally the receiver would have caught that ball” is a valid excuse.

Professionals succeed at their tasks >95% of the time. That’s why they’re pros and we’re not. But for some reason, people like to discount those <5% of dropped passes, wild pitches, and shanked putts as if they don’t exist. But the fact is, they do happen and they do count. It doesn’t make the loss a fluke. On the contrary, mistakes like that are the bread-and-butter of losing to other professionals.

So you know why the Ravens shot themselves in the foot and the Steelers didn’t? Because the Steelers are a better team. That win was as “quality” as any.

I don’t think that anyone could assert with a straight face that the Steelers did not shoot themselves in the foot in that game. How often does a team stand around and look at a fumble lying on the ground while someone on the defense sneaks up, picks up the ball and scores a touchdown?

That was in fact, the biggest collective team brain fart I ever recall seeing, and I’ve seen alot of Steeler games.

Trying to read between the lines, I’d guess at the time it meant they were feeling pretty casual about facing the Ravens backed up against the goal line. A little too casual no doubt, but…

Umm…the Steelers were the team that was backed up against the goal line on that play.

That’s what he meant to say, he just misplaced the modifier.

Actually, my point was to refute what Dio said about the Packers backing into the Super Bowl by pointing out that the Steelers faced a similar situation. I’m shooting a hole in his argument by equating the two. I’m making no case against either team, just pointing out the hypocrisy of his statement.

I suppose fandom ruins reading comprehension.

Well, duh! Fandom rules everything.

Shout out to Dallas - Love Field which was closed today. Fuckers. My flight got cancelled, nothing on standby, so I gotta try again tomorrow.

Grrrrr.
