Superdude just MIGHT be Chicago bound...for good!

You read right, folks. After much thought, I think I’m going to pull up stakes here in Kentucky, and settle in the Windy City. I’ve resigned myself to having to take a day job, at least initially. That’s where www.monster.com comes in. See if I have any skills. What I need, though, are apartment leads. Anyone know where I could find a decent place that won’t force me to sell a kidney on eBay? Especially for a guy with a less-than-stellar credit rating? Anyone need a roommate?

Hello?

Hello?

Anyone there?

Don’t everyone answer at once. But some guidance is appreciated.

Dammit! Can a moderator please fix my link? Thanks!

Sorry, I’ve already got a guy from Boston in my spare room.

Superdude, be more specific. What’s affordable? What do you need in an apartment? What kind of neighborhood do you want to live in - near bars and whatnot, near work, near downtown, more family-ish?

Where I live, St. Ben’s/Roscoe Village, apartments range from pretty affordable and basic to ridiculously expensive. It’s a nice area, with lots of kids and trees and stuff. Ravenswood is really nice too (uh, yup, I’m, a northsider, why do you ask?) A general rule of thumb is the closer to the downtown area you get, the more expensive the apartment. Logan Square is an up-and-coming (read: rapidly gentrifying) neighborhood, but it’s still an interesting and diverse area in my opinion. And from what I’ve seen and heard, it’s still possible to find a decent and reasonably priced apartment. If you’re looking for cheap but still close to amenities, Humboldt Park or Ukrainian Village might work - they can be a bit dicey neighborhood-wise, but I’ve never had any problems when I’ve been there unadvisably late at night.

The best resource I’ve found for apartments is on-- ta-da! - the Chicago Reader’s Spacefinder, at http://65.201.198.41/cgi-bin/spacefind.cgi. Lets you sort by neighborhood and price.

If none of that works out, Krusty and I have a moldy storage space in our basement that you can sleep in. It even has its own (terrifying) toilet!

I have a friend who is looking for a subletter for June, July, August, September. Person must be responsible about bills and rent and love cats. Her stuff and her two cats will remain in the apt., and you’ll get a discount on the rent for taking care of them.

Sound interesting? Email me for more details.

I think I will do this very thing. Thanks, magdalene.

FTR: There’s a Chicago in the Pacific Coast state of Oaxaca, Mexico and another north of Illinois in Wisconsin.

FTR: There’s a nit-picker in this thread.
