Supergirl

The show is becoming The Adventures of J’onn J’onnz. I don’t mind that, though.

When they showed the Green Martians being herded into the pens, I found myself wondering how a twenty-foot-tall fence would keep all those flying Martians inside.

I knew there had to be a reason I immediately hated him, the lucky jerk.

This might be a dumb question or already answered earlier in the thread and I forgot but is National City supposed to be in California?

It does seem to be earthquake- prone.

I’m going to spoiler this, even though it’s in next week’s preview.

It seems that the girl that Henshaw discovered in Maxwell Lord’s facility is Max’s very own Bizarro Supergirl clone.

Slight hijack, but what’s with the city names for this & the other DC tv shows? “National City,” “Star City,” “Central City,” “Opal City,” “Midway City” (which I guess is halfway between Central City and the yet to be mentioned Edge City). Is there rule that all cities in the universe must be named Something-really-boring City (Even “Metropolis” is just “Mother City” translated)? Am I the only one who finds that jarring?

It’s a DC thing. Most of them were made up in the 30’s and 40’s so they sound a little corny. Newer ones sound just as corny as an homage to the older ones.

I still like it better than Marvel’s “Hey, here’s yet another NYC-based hero!”

Poor Winn is going to be stuck in the friendzone forever, isn’t he?

I don’t blame him for going in for that kiss. She was sending all the signals. And her mooning over Jimmy Olsen is getting annoying. Winn is a good match for her, from what I can see, so it’s weird that they’re torturing him like this.

And when DC does try to get away from that pattern, they come up with ridiculous names like Blüdhaven (complete with umlaut!), so really we’re better off with all the Citys.

You forgot “Coast City”.

And frankly I preferred “Starling City” to “Star City” - it had more character.

An early Batman comic had him based in New York. But DC decided that since their characters were fictional, it was better to have them in fictional cities.

Which brings me back to my original question, is this supposed to be the west coast? I guess it must be vague on purpose.

Just so I’m clear:

A dozen or so Kryptonians (complete with full Superman powers) are preparing for an attack on National City in order to mumble mumble the entire human race, but before they do this they feel the need to disable Supergirl. I guess Superman is on holiday in the north pole?

Hey Jimmy, while you’re standing there over Supergirl’s unconscious body, definitely don’t take a minute to give Superman a head’s up. Good call.

Also, entire DEO, definitely don’t gear up with those kryptonite bullets we saw you subdue Supergirl with in the first couple episodes. It was a much better idea to (apparently) melt down all your kryptonite bullets into a single sword, because it’s always best to fight kryptonians up close with melee weapons. That was a stroke of tactical genius, for sure.

This episode was very reminiscent of the Alan Moore story “For the Man Who Has Everything”.

The episode title was For the Girl Who Has Everything.

Agreed it doesn’t make any sense. But the show has to avoid the “call in the boy scout every time Kara gets in trouble” trope.

I don’t think the sword was fully kryptonite, I think it was simply a sword with a kryptonite edge. Which makes sense - you can run out of ammo and it’s nice to have a backup weapon.

Doesn’t explain why they weren’t loaded out with the kryponite bullets or why Alex decided to go for the difficult to pull off (but cool looking) thrust through the back instead of just lopping off Astra’s head. (alright, I know it was for the looks, and so the DEO didn’t just slaughter the evil kryptonians, and so Kara could have a last goodbye with Astra, but it still doesn’t make a lick of sense in universe).

I will say that having J’onn try to impersonate Kara and be an assistant was funny but so obviously not going to work that I’m sad the writers allowed him to try. Seriously, Winn should have just said “Kara’s sick to puking and her cell isn’t working, that’s why she didn’t come in” and leave it at that.

I wonder if Jimmy and Winn will start doing consultant work for the DEO now that they know about it. I was with Henshaw, he should have been PISSED that Alex brought them along, friends of Kara or not.

At least Someone finally broke through to the ‘Kryptonians are too dangerous to leave wandering around’ headspace and decided the appropriate action is kill one when you can.

Sure, Superman and Supergirl are worthy additions. Outside of them, however, it’s as dangerous as having a Sith wandering around off leash. Sooner or later horrible things will happen. Like velociraptors, ‘They should all be destroyed’.

For people who don’t watch The Flash, Supergirl made an extremely brief cameo in this week’s episode. Extremely minor Spoiler for The Flash:

While the Flash moved between worlds, she appeared in one of the Parallel universes he passed by.

Aren’t those blue doo-dads they The kryptonians) all wear a counter to the kryptonite bullets? I seem to remember that from when they raided NotLuthor’s building…
