Supermarket Credit Card Readers

I stopped at the nearby supermarket this AM (mistake, never shop just after Church lets out!). I noticed that nearly all the folks using the do-it-your-self creditcard gagets needed help. Did I just come across an unusualy inept group of shoppers, or is this common? I have noticed that there are many differant types of card readers that the teeming millions encounter but the are pretty simple “talking” one through the process. Anyone else notice this?

People seem to be especially stupid when it comes to these, so much so at my grocery store that all the cashiers can press all the buttons on them for people without even turning them around! Some people can’t even figure out where to swipe the card, so forget about reading the plain-as-day directions on the screen. I will say in their defense that on alot of them some of the print on the keys is worn off, but seriously, it’s not “rocket-surgery” people!

Shit! A LOT. A LOT. A LOT. (I know that one!) Not “alot.” Dammit!

I have trouble with these things. The problem is, yes, there are a lot of different ones. I go to Walgreens, I can use the one there because I know where all the buttons are. Then I go to the supermarket, and I have to find the buttons. Once I’ve used a particular machine a couple of times, I get used to it, but then I go to 7-11, and there’s a completely different arrangement of buttons…

I hope we never become a cashless society. I’m an idiot when it comes to those ATM/debit/credit card readers.

The trouble with Sir Launcelot is by the time he comes riding up, you’ve already married King Arthur.

I’ve found that each EFT-POS card machine in every shop has a different alignment of buttons - so when you think the ‘OK’ button is in the bottom right, but no, that’s the ‘Cancel’ button - D’oh!

And which way up the card goes is also different in every store. sigh

This is a problem where you are? Yipe. Sure isn’t here.

I don’t have a particular problem with using these machines. However, my beef is that one store will accept my debit card ONLY as a debit card, another store will accept the card ONLY as a credit card.

Short of carrying a list of stores and what they will accept my card as, I can’t do anything but look like an moron when I have to go through the “approval”, have it denied and then have to try the card again as something else.

Maybe some of these people have the same problem. I am always aware of what other people are thinking when I have to use the darn thing twice and I’m embarrassed about it.

And that’s just my opinion. I could be wrong.
