Supermarket items you miss

Tomato flavored Ramen. Man, that stuff disappeared right around the time I went to college.

I order some of those occasionally. I think they use a different type of raisin, so it doesn’t taste the same. Definitely not bad, just not the same. :frowning:

Next time I find something I like, I’m going to buy a lifetime supply.

I loved Cheetos Cheesy Checkers. Usta eat 'em with chopsticks.

Ditto on Hidden Valley Ranch Blue Cheese mix. I can get it online only if I buy a case of it, minimum. Enough for to make 18 gallons.

… wait a minute… lifetime supply…hmmm.

Anyway, why oh why isn’t there a demand for dressing mix packets other than Ranch or sometimes Italian? They used to have this Zesty Herb dressing mix that was to die for. I actually called the company to find out where to get it: nowhere, they stopped making it. Bastards.

I miss Campbell Soup’s Scotch Broth.

The people who make Slim Fast totally wussed out trying to be “low-carb”.

When the Atkins craze really caught on, Slim Fast started reformulating many of their “shake mixes” and premixed canned shakes. My favorite flavor of shake mix was the original Slim Fast Chocolate Malt. I really hate most “diet” products, because I can’t stand the taste of artificial sweeteners. But I think that the malt disguised the fake sweetener taste. I used to mix the powder with skim milk for a quick tasty breakfast. If I happened to be out of milk, the powder tasted ok mixed with water. And for a treat, I’d sprinkle the powder over coffee yogurt, or plain or vanilla yogurt. Occasionally I would buy the premixed shakes - the Cappucino Royale flavor was the only one I liked. I probably had some form of Slim Fast every day for years, ever since it first came out on the market. Until about a year ago.

Now Slim Fast powder can only be purchased online “while supplies last” but they don’t offer the chocolate malt flavor. The regular chocolate flavor tastes nasty to me. And the premixed shake flavors they offer (still in stores) are watered down. They have half the carbs, half the calories, and I assume twice the water. But cost the same or more. I would rather they kept the formula the same and made the can half the size and encouraged you to mix it with water. That way at least I’d have the option of getting the full-flavored version.

Oh, man, I miss Pepperidge Farms Corn Muffins. They came frozen, you heated them up in the microwave. The blueberry ones were good too, but the corn muffins were to die for. They were really soft and sweet, and really moist. In the mid-late 80s, me and my brother used to make those for weekend breakfasts while watching cartoons. Sooo good.

I think I have a supermarket food curse - every time I discover a great new product, they stop making it. I used to love Barilla Spicy Red Pepper spaghetti sauce, but they stopped making it after around 6 months or a year. Ditto with Best Foods (Hellmans for those east of the Mississippi) italian dressing - it was my favorite, now gone. It’s happened to me lots of times.

But what I wouldn’t give for a Pepperidge Farms corn muffin. I’ve tried many other types of pre-made corn muffins, corn muffin mixes, and from-scratch recipes, and nothing comes close. :frowning:

I have to second Gaudere…I LOVED Boppers. In fact, I had forgotten all about them until reading her post. I could eat about 4 of them a day.
A store right across the street still sells these things:

Corn flavored Doritos
Quake
Mr Pibb (and Tab too, another soda I thought had been long gone)
Bacon Flavored Cheese Whiz
Sugar Daddy’s, Good n’ Fruity’s, and Zagnuts

I see them every day.

One thing I haven’t seen around in YEARS was a favorite magazine of mine. Games magazine was a mag that featured all kinds of puzzles and problems and various mind benders. They disappeared from all stores here long ago and I haven’t seen one since and I’m seriously wondering if maybe they stopped printing them.

The stores around here don’t seem to carry UNFROSTED PopTarts anymore.

williamweigand, I buy my unfrosted Pop Tarts at Super WalMart. They only have blueberry and strawberry unfrosted.

Sadly, all the stores in this area have stopped selling Prosciutto. I guess I’m going to have to find it online somewhere.

Thanks. That might be the only place I hadn’t looked for them.

Walmart has it! It’s by the deli. I can’t vouch for its tastiness, though.

Is it true that Mallomars have only ever been available east of the Mississippi? Heard that someplace. Always wondered why.

chaoticdonkey, we have 2 Super WalMarts here in this area, and neither one sell it anymore. They just discontinued selling it a few months ago, because hardly anyone ever bought it. I can’t imagine.

Apparently they’re a Jewish thing, at least according to Salon.com.

(Oddly enough, 2 similar products, Scooter Pie and Moon Pie, have no ethnic associations, although the former is popular in the Midwest and the latter a staple in the Deep South.)

I miss a candy called “Broadway.” No one has ever heard of it. I used to buy it at a Mom 'n Pop Store down the street from where I grew up in Chicago. It was strawberry flavored licorice rolled up and flat–usually had five rolls. It was the best tasting licorice. Have not been able to find it since, ah, 1970?

This whole thread has brought back a ton of memories for me! I have forgotten about so many foodstuffs that used to be around. It is blowing my mind!

Whitney’s yogurt. Disappeared shortly after I started eating yogurt and decided that was my favorite.

Addams Sour chewing gum. I haven’t seen this since I was in high school, and it was hard to find even then.

Choc-O-Lite, an Americanized bubbly chocolate bar (like Aero/Wispa bars) that was briefly available in the 80s.

LavenderLemon way back on page 1 mentioned Kraft/Philadelphia salmon cream cheese. It’s still available around here, I’m glad to say.

I must go visit Philadelphia ASAP.

Last week I bought that Philadelphia salmon cream cheese, so it’s still out there.

I miss: Magic Middles cookies, Reddenbaucher’s Honey & Butter microwaveable popcorn (the only microwave popcorn I liked, period), and 3-layer jello.

Some company used to make frozen milkshakes that you microwaved for 30 seconds or so then stirred and you had a nice cold milkshake. I loved them things but haven’t seen any for years.

Shake N Bake for potatoes. We’ve been looking and looking - my husband loves that stuff. If anyone has it in their stores, would you be willing, if I paid for it, to send me some???
