Supernatural 2.04 (spoilers)

Whad’ja guys think, huh?

I loved it. I think each episode this season is better than the previous one, and the first episode set the bar pretty high.

I thought the monster-of-the-week business was taken care of very well. I was grossed out when the emo dude kissed the zombie girl, but I liked the storyline and liked the subtle makeup they put on the actress so that she wasn’t all dessicated and crumbly and you could believe the emo dude was just lovesick enough not to care she was dead.

Loved the humor, Sam’s porn moment and Dean working that into the conversation three times, Dean and the girl’s journal, Jensen Ackles’ huge green eyes, Jared Padalecki’s huge…self (and the poor boy broke his wrist in real life and was all puffy from painkillers, most likely, in some of those scenes).

Wow. Jensen Ackles was once again amazing in this episode – how tight and controlled and focused and dangerous he was until the final scene. I thought that undercurrent of tension was so threatening…I was just waiting for an eruption of some kind…

…And then the last scene. Oh, DEAN.

Who would have guessed that a silly WB/CW show could be so adept at writing characters that actually change and grow over time? I love that character revelations are made that make you re-evaluate past episodes in light of the new information. So, the whole time I thought Dean was furious with his father for whispering whatever it was he whispered in Dean’s ear…Dean was wrecked and wracked with guilt over John’s exchange for Dean’s life. This makes me think that whatever he whispered must be about Sam, but it can’t be so bad that it superceded Dean’s grief over his father. (Nothing like, “Sam is the son of the demon,” thank goodness.) So, in the scene two episodes ago, when Dean kept Sam from knowing what John whispered to him, he didn’t do that deliberately to keep Sam ignorant – he was distracted by his own suffering.
Next week’s preview looked awesome.

Oops, make that “desiccated.”

I am unable to reply to this comment as I am still curled up in the fetal position from that episode. Good God.

Kripke is a magnificent bastard and he owns my soul.

My roommate and I cried like little bitches when Dean let that one tear go. We’re pathetic, and we love it.

I thought the porn moment was great–Sam is usually such an upright, untouchable character, and it was nice to see him humanized just a little. It has nothing to do with me just plain enjoying thinking about sex and Jared Padalecki at the same time. Nothing at all.

Ah, gallows fodder, hence the “I think she broke my hand” and “We’ll get it looked at” lines. Sam gets a cast. (I kept wondering how many times he likely hit his head during the filming of the basement zombie-lair scene.) One thing I’ve always enjoyed about this show is that the Winchesters are not superpowered, and they get their asses kicked just about every damn week.

My favorite line, as they break into the emo dude’s house:

“We’re the counselors. We’re here to hug you.”

Hugely paraphrased, but it made me laugh.

I’m really loving this show. I watched from the beginning, and at first it was more of a guilty pleasure. But now I just love it.

I thought the ending was going to wind up involving the father having to painfully chant from another page of ancient Greek hoodoo spells in order to send his daughter back to the grave.

Also, I just came to the realization that my two favorites shows are on CW: Veronica Mars and Supernatural.

That makes me feel very strange.

I just kept wondering how they were going to close the coffin with that big honkin’ silver stake sticking out of her.

I am just very happy that we now have our local CW station in high definition.

I’m just happy that WB was the local broadcast station here, so we got it with rabbit ears. Now that the CW has taken over, I’m still glad. We also get PBS, but man, Supernatural is so addicting that I hardly ever flip between my two channels anymore.

Brendon

I don’t want Dean in high definition. I need to be able to leave the house sometimes.

My roommate and I bought the first season DVDs and just sat on the couch for a day and a half. It was pretty pathetic, and it wasn’t even HD.

I was the WB’s bitch for many, many years after I left their alleged demographic behind.

This show is so much better than it has any right to be. It’s on the CW! It stars soap opera and WB actors! It’s produced by McG!!! And yet, it consistently fails to suck.

I know! I just wrote a huge long email to my non-SN-watching friend, going on and on and on about how good this show is…and at one point I looked up and was like, jeez louise, no network show (even my beloved Homicide) has succeeded in turning me into a raving fangirl as quickly and efficiently as this show. What is wrong with this picture?

They do a marvelous job of pairing the fun, kick-ass, horror-movie stuff, with the weighty, serious family psychosocial drama. It’s so cool to have a very real-seeming family dynamic ground the fluffy cool zombie/demon/vampire business.

And I love the fact that there’s continuity and real character arcs, and that they’re willing to take their lead characters to some very ugly places (like last week’s episode) for the sake of emotional realism.

I don’t know so much about the demographic. Last night, I was struck again about the constant references to things most teenage girls (who seem to me to be the target audience) might not understand–Romero movies, and the “Duckie-love” line seemed to me like it was put in there for everybody over 25 who just can’t stop watching. Also, the Ghost reference in the season opener.

I don’t care who it’s there for–it makes me laugh.

Thank the gods I’m not the only one. That- and the fact that they dug up a perfectly rectangular, not-six-feet-deep, hole with shovels- kind of bugged me.

I’ve started recording CSI and watching this show live, instead of the other way around.

RE: the hole – they were excavating a recently filled grave that had been dug with a backhoe, so it didn’t bug me that their hole was perfectly square. Plus, John Winchester seems like he was a pretty anal taskmaster and probably taught his boys to dig to spec.

I’d like to know what happened with the writing and production over ummer. It’s quite obvious their budget is a little bigger. But it’s also how they use it in terms of lighting, framing scenes, editing.
And from being MOTW show with two good looking guys and very cute female guest stars, it’s really taken a turn for something completely different and very interesting.
This means, of course, that the ratings will start to drop and they’ll get canned mid season.
