Supreme Court: Anti-gay funeral picketers allowed

That’s the headline over at the AP. Basically, the court overturned a $5 million settlement against the Westboro “Baptist” “Church”*.

A Dad of a killed solider sued the “church” because they protested his son’s funeral. Honestly, I don’t blame him.

I understand the decision, but still want to see this “church” pay for their evil.

The vote was 8-1 and Alito was the lone dissenter. He argued that the right to free speech does not mean we have to allow the brutal abuse of those who are grieving.

I wonder if that Phelps group will ever pay for their actions. I think Fred Phelps may actually have some kind of weird mental disorder. He appears, in the last 20 years or so anyway, to have gone off the deep end.

So, thoughts? Is the court right or wrong?

*Well, they aren’t Baptist or a Church, so I don’t know how they get to call themselves that.

It’s already being debated in this thread.

Since you’re asking for opinions, and opinions about this would probably turn into a debate, I’ll refer everyone to the GD thread and close this one.
