Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade (No longer a draft as of 06-24-2022.)

The Republicans have no interest in banning interracial marriage. Zero. It’s not on their radar whatsoever.

Gay marriage is certainly in the crosshairs, and gay sex probably as well.

Agreed. It’s about controlling women’s sexuality and punishing them for sex out of wedlock. If it were about life, they would support a host of social programs and they would wear masks during pandemics.

Run-roh.

I take your larger point, but maybe I’m missing something else along the way: you mention that “we have a right to be secure in our private possessions unless a court issues a search warrant, and to do that they need to have good cause” — by which I take it you mean that no such right applies when our possessions are out in public and can be plainly seen, at which point no search warrant is needed — and so the ensuing claim is that there’s a right to get an abortion even if the person seeking one declares it on live national television, and then drives past a billboard ad she took out to announce it, and then talks things over with reporters on the front steps on her way in to the clinic and again on her way out of the clinic? Because nothing in Roe limited it to situations that are like unto You’d Need A Search Warrant To Learn About This, right?

The Republicans’ sole interest is in maintaining minority rule. There is a contingent of their base that would be thrilled, and even the rest will easily acquiesce to the reasoning that “this should be a states’ rights matter.” During the recent Supreme Court hearings, Republican senators already hinted that jurisprudence on racial equality violates the Constitutional separation of powers between state and federal law.

So few states might actually re-ban interracial marriage, but the base will be energized by the idea of establishing state authority. And then a handful of states might then actually start banning it. Once you have a permanent minority government, it will go to extremes to keep its strongest supporters excited.

WTA: Madmonk proved me right before I finished typing.

What I am getting from your post is that they don’t actually care if unborn fetuses are terminated, they want to punish women for daring to have sex?

Except that that was proposed by members of the abolition movement. Your attempt at smearing people who wanted to end slavery by comparing them to people who you just said were out for vengeance is misguided, at best.

So, on the one hand, you are right, this isn’t about abortion, it’s about hate. OTOH, your comparison is not only incredibly wrong, but extremely offensive as well.

They probably will.

Force the mother to bear and raise the child, and let the man entirely off the hook.

Yet.

What makes you think that they will decide to be satisfied and stop there?

I think plenty of Republicans would like to leave interracial marriage to the states (as it was pre-Loving). They might be afraid to say so. But why would we trust them to stop at abortion, or gay marriage, or gay sex?

Except it is

Fair enough, my point was more that, just because the authoritarian hasn’t come for you yet, don’t assume you are safe.

I’ll concede that the authoritarian already has his eye out, and you shouldn’t even have that fig leaf to feel safe.

Again and again, the GOP says exactly what their next move is and we are surprised when they do it.

I mean … what if we returned to a “non-remunerative, bespoke, non-contractual employment relationship” between red state whites and certain minority citizens of those states ?

Say … for things like agriculture, heavy labor, and manufacturing ?

Who set the Wayback Machine for the 1850’s ??

I read somewhere recently (I can’t find it now so no link) that it should be remembered:

  • Five of the supreme court justices were appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote.
  • Those justices were approved of by senators who represent a minority of the American people.

John Roberts seems like a competent jurist and a decent human being, but he’ll go down in history as the CJ who was at the wheel when the SCOTUS completely went off the rails.

It’s not a matter of trust:

Despite Partisan Rancor, Americans Broadly Support LGBTQ Rights

As for interracial families, think about adoption. Nowadays, the American right favors color-blind policies. Some here will think they are lying about that. But, policy-wise, they are determined to prove they aren’t racists.

In a similar vein, I keep reading that 60% of the American public want to keep abortion legal. Which would be great if there was such a thing as a national referendum.

What matters is that 26 states are ready to ban abortions, which indicates that 52 senators feel the same way.

Gotta wonder just how many times we’re gonna have to go through the ‘Republicans would never do that.’ followed by cites that show they’ve already said they want to do exactly that?
