If only that butterfly hadn’t flapped its wings.
I mean, come on.
A few cranks you happen to know isn’t the GOP. Yes, I know some people are lunatics.
I’d say the GOP has one HUNDRED ideas more likely to be their focus and quite plausible.
Have you lived in a dry county in Alabama or Kansas?

The GOP will eventually do anything that even the smallest number of its cranks want. The rest of them will end up going along with it, even if they don’t really support it … and then eventually many of them will end up supporting it, after it becomes party platform.
That has been the history of the GOP for the past 50-60 years. Your suggestion that "well, this one issue is too extreme for that to happen* isn’t very convincing.
They will always end up doing that thing that everyone says they would never do.
I can’t think of less insightful or accurate posts than the few you’ve made trying to conflate prohibition nonsense from 50 year ago with abortion.
That’s understandable, but I do find parallels between the two moral prohibitions.
I keep recalling this great scene from “Billy Jack,” except … Billy had what might be considered a liberal bent, and the ‘other guy’ in the scene is like a fair number of the Most Detestable Republicans of today – about a minute – erring to the conservative – NSFW - violence, language:
Abortion for the rich.
With everything the Republican party has become recently I don’t know how you can come to that conclusion. They are literally opposed to free and fair elections. They’re a fascist (or proto-fascist at best) party. And fascists need an “other” as the enemy. So while it may not the be next thing on the chopping block (which is likely gay marriage), make no mistake they will come for those they see as inferior from mingling with those that are superior.
I half expect them to move on to legalizing rape.
Well, because there’s no evidence they’re after interracial marriage. Yes, I know cranks exist. They REALLY enjoy the pretense they aren’t racist. They are, on the other hand, quite clearly after gay marriage, gay sex in general, the separation of church and state, public education (watch; total elimination of public schools will be GOP orthodoxy before 2030) libraries, PBS, voting rights, open and fair elections, electing Senators at all (just you wait and see), immigration, NATO, free trade, and free speech, so they have a busy schedule.
Ok. I see your point. I misunderstood you.
That’s totally unfair!!!
They also win elections by preventing other minorities from voting!
Yep.
…
That lie is pushed very strongly by Russian bots. The GOP loves it. Keeps the youth vote home.
Yeah, they only won the House, the Senate and the Oval Office. This meme is totally wrong.
Moderating:
Please, please, please, take the discussion regarding the 2016 election to another thread. We have many to choose from. It is not germane to the topic of discussion here, and you all know this. Thanks.
This is certainly true. Just as with a public restaurant, you get an itemized list of everything that was ordered and its price, which is also listed on the menu. And the member signs the slip, much like a CC receipt. My point is that there’s no actual monetary transaction when the items are served and consumed; payment is deferred until the member gets their monthly statement.
Although it leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I’ll probably be raked over the coals for saying this, I think it is unfair to say that Braun would support outlawing interracial marriage.
The most he said is that according to his view consistent understanding of states rights would allow for a state to outlaw interracial marriage. This is similar to a freedom of speech advocate acknowledging that his understanding of the first amendment would allow people promote white supremacist propaganda. Such an observation doesn’t make him a pro white supremacist.
Further unlike the free speech argument, where allowing such language will virtually guarantee that someone somewhere would promote such the chances of an anti-interacial marriage law passing is vanishingly small in this day and age. Interacial marriage has a 94% approval rating so even taking into account our political segregation, it is highly unlikely that there is a state anywhere close to a majority thinks that interracial marriage is bad, much less wants it outlawed. So for Braun probably viewed the question as entirely theoretical, similar to one arguing that the ability of Biden to require vaccine passports would also allow him to post armed guards in front of the houses of the unvacinated to prevent them from leaving the house. Yes, he probably has that power but there is no way that he would actually propose such a mandate.
That said, the idea that interracial marriage is not protected by the constitution is willfully ignorant, and his support for this belief marks Braun as being in all likelihood a vile bigot.
I consider this part debatable, considering that we have a 50-50 split, and one or two DINOs on the left side of the aisle. But hey, at least we got the leadership and the committee chairmanships, so I suppose that’s something.
If this whole situation were turned around with the Republicans holding the White House, Congress, and barely the Senate by a 50-50 split, I wouldn’t put it past them to immediately end the filibuster and enact a national ban on abottion.
But he would support getting the votes of those who think he would support it.
And I think this is a big part of the problem with the GOP. There is no limit to where they will whore for votes. I’ve no doubt plenty of them couldn’t give a rat about abortion, interracial marriage, or a host of other things. But there’s a significant portion of old cranky people who vote, and they especially vote in the primaries.
