All the teachers of younger kids I know get sick a lot too, which is a fair number actually
Among teachers, the folk wisdom is that you get sick a lot the first couple years, and then you adapt. If you move to a new school, you may have to go through the process again, as you work your way through the local germ pool.
That’s pure anecdote, but very widely believed.
I also want to point out that it’s not just because kids have poor hygiene, it’s because 30 people in a room isn’t the norm for many places that aren’t schools. Even if they didn’t share lollipops and smear boogers on each other, they’d still spend a lot more time within a couple feet of a lot more people.
And kindergartners smear more lollipops and boogers on each other, so they (typically) spread more diseases than high schoolers, even though both are usually crammed in 30 to a room.
I’m personally a little nervous about kids going back because New Hampshire didn’t force schools to give up their online options until 7 weeks before the school year ended, so we didn’t have much time to see if kids were getting and/or spreading covid. Our vaccination numbers for 12+ are good, and my fingers are crossed that we won’t hear of big outbreaks amongst the little kids before they’re able to be vaccinated too
