While people all over the country (mostly Democrats and ((do you believe it – poloce chiefs))) are up at arms about the Renewed Access to Fully Automatic Weapons - there are a very few (Kerry, Koppel and Kennedy not included) who know the truth.
Those of us that actually followed the AWB from the beginning always knew that it only banned “ugly guns” and in almost all cases you could get an equivalent gun in a “pretty” version, the ban was a “feel good” thing as it did absolutely nothing!.
It was more “posing and posturing” for votes and dollars, welcome to America!
The whole AWB was about mis-leading people that don’t know much about guns.
I’m surprised that Kerry, and a police officer don’t at least know a little bit more about the AWB. And the difference between an auto and semi-auto.
It seems the Police officer at least conceded that he would learn more. Pretty lame, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that he isn’t up on current events.
Kerry sure as shit should know better. He is a hunter, was in Nam and is a policy maker that should know the current issues. No excuse there.
Ammunition feeding devices were limited to ten rounds. There was a grandfather clause that meant the ban only applied to newly manufactured magazines. You could still own and sell existing magazines but the price went up quite a bit. In some cases where a new weapon came out during the ban there were never any high capacity magazines available for civilian use.
There is no federal limit on magazine capacity but some states have limits.
FWIW a clip is different than a magazine. A clip usually holds cartridges by the base and may or may not be inserted into the weapon. I’m not aware of any clip that was over ten rounds capacity in the first place, just things like common five and ten round stripper clips and eight round en-block clips for the M1. Magazines enclose the ammunition.
There are one-shot-per-trigger-pull versions of Uzis and AK-47s, and before the ban, you could buy them. Presumably, now that the ban has expired, they’re legal for sale again. I’m sure about this, because an old friend of mine has some. He collects guns, especially unusual ones. He has a “target version” of the AK-47 (he says it’s not accurate at all.) He has an Uzi carbine and the shorter, pistol grip Uzi, both in semi-automatic. He has no interest in breaking the law or getting the special permits necessary for a full-auto gun.
I may have some of this terminology wrong. I’m not a gun maven.
Actually, semi-auto knock-offs of the Ak-47 & Uzi were widely available during the ban - all manufacturers had to do was take off the flash suppressor/baynet lug/not use a folding stock. To the untrained eye though, a pre-ban & post ban weapon would be pretty hard to tell apart.
The semi-auto, non-magazine version of the AK-47 is the SKS. It uses the previously mentioned 10 round stripper clips. I have one. With the bayonette. It is a highly accurate and powerful weapon for $150 (which included 1000 rounds). And that was after the ban. And if the beer cans and Bowling pins I shoot at decide to charge me when I’m out of ammo, I can alway stab them with the bayonette.
OL: Are you a gun owner? If so, what is your favorite gun?
Bottom of page 4:
Bush: Yes. My favorite gun is a Weatherby, Athena 20-gauge (over/under).
**Kerry: My favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam. I don’t own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle. **
Assuming the article is correct, of course.
I could be wrong, but that sounds like he took one home with him.
I’m not saying this guy is wrong (from what I’ve read he isn’t), but the linked article contains no outside information or cites and, judged by itself, is entirely unconvincing. In other words, it ain’t even close to the Straight Dope. If you’re going to post something as capital ‘T’ Truth, could it at least have some facts?
