President’s can make their whole reputation with how they respond to a crisis. Bush the Younger was president on 9/11, but in the aftermath he took charge and launched decisive action in response. (It was bollocks, but we didn’t know that at the time.) The country rallied around him, and he was re-elected.
If COVID was a Chinese plot, they were handing Trump a golden opportunity. All he had to do was follow the science, take decisive steps to keep people healthy, and it could have launched him into a second term. But, he didn’t. He fucked it up. COVID as a plot only makes sense if the perpetrators knew, in advance, that Trump was going to fuck it up.
Anyone who says COVID was a plot is admitting the same thing. They knew Trump would fuck it up, too. That’s the only way it makes any sense.
That’s where the doublethink comes in - it was a biological doomsday weapon unleashed by Jyna and Dr. Fauci and also a hoax no more dangerous than the common cold.
Yeah, it’s classic conspiracy theorist thinking, or rather, not-thinking. Since they are avoiding using critical thought in the first place conspiracy theories tend to be fractally irrational, full of absurdity at every level; including internal contradictions like that. A mishmash of whatever ideas feel “right” to them with no concern for if they fit together.
Really if you think about it, it’s the pandemic version of the classic fascist conception of the enemy as simultaneously an existential threat and pathetically weak.
I had a meeting with the head of purchasing for a very large customer of ours yesterday. I’ve known this guy a while and he was definitely a Trumper.
Well, during the small talk part of the meeting yesterday he went on a tirade about what an idiot Trump is. So there is hope.
By the way, pharma also has supply chains that crisscross borders. Our prices will have to go up starting next week.
This is a wonderful concept.
But alas, it’s just more “I didn’t think the leopard would it my face” sobbing. People who are head of purchasing for large companies and people who don’t have holdings in the stock market (whether as individual stocks or as part of a retirement plan or mutual fund) just think it’s more standing up for the little guy by eating the slightly less little guy.

CT-style thinking calls an image to mind for me. Namely a child jumbling several jigsaw puzzles’ pieces together on the table and just sort of piling the pieces here and there with no real attempt at getting tab A into matching slot B, then calling Mom over to marvel at how well they’ve assembled the puzzle.
