I argued that here about a decade ago. But apparently it’s not necessarily the case. China hits a demographic wall pretty soon, one that is worse than the US one. And Xi is doing nothing to evolve the country into one that consumes more, possibly hitting a trap with low productivity investments. One scenario Goldman Sachs traced had Chinese GDP overtaking the US in 2035, but not growing exponentially apart from the US afterwards. Their per person GDP would remain lower overall presumably.
The 2022 report reasonably assumed the US wouldn’t shoot itself in the foot. Oh well.
That might have been true before Trump; but post-Trump the US is going to enter such a rapid and permanent decline that it’s going to be out of the running in terms of international significance before too long. China just basically needs to avoid outright destruction to eclipse the US; not because of any virtue of theirs, but because America has chosen self destruction.
