It’s like Truman said about Eisenhower:
He’ll say do this, do that! And nothing will happen. Poor Ike–it won’t be a bit like the Army.

Tech requires a great capacity for logic. And no small amount of guile. Not much need for reason, though.
And when reason is lacking:
Newsweek article based on AJC story has no paywall:
It must have been quite a shock.
Another Trump voter figured that ICE roundups wouldn’t include his wife, who was arrested at the airport on the way back from a fun-filled holiday in Puerto Rico. She was from Peru; article says she had applied for her green card but had overstayed her visa. Surely she wasn’t the type to get arrested, right? I guess it was a misunderstanding:
[Hubby] saw her as a funny, caring, hard-working woman who came legally, not one of the “illegals” who the president he supported promised to deport.
Overstaying a visa is considered an administrative, not criminal, violation of U.S. immigration law, immigration attorneys say. It can result in a bar to returning to the U.S. for up to 10 years, or it can be lawfully forgiven, under a “waiver of unlawful presence,” if the immigrant’s spouse or immediate relative is a U.S. citizen.
UPDATE. Ms. Munoz of Wisconsin was released on bond in mid-March after 49 days of ICE incarceration. The couple were reunited in Louisiana
Mr. Bartels, the husband, does not regret his vote for Trump but thinks that, “The system needs to be revamped for better processes and communication between departments.” He’s hopeful that Trump will improve it.
BUT…
That’s what kills me about these people! They can’t bring themselves to denounce him even when the leopards are at their faces! Instead it’s “thank you, sir, may I have another?”
To quote Carl Sagan:
“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”
Voting for Trump was stupid. Blatantly so. That’s the origin of this thread’s title after all; people voted for the party and the President who very obviously would harm them. And now that the obvious is happening their pride won’t let them admit that they metaphorically stuck their hand in the hole labeled “wood chipper” in big red letters then flipped the switch.
Honestly, my heart is really torn on this sort of thing. On the one hand, I don’t want anyone to be deported. On the other hand… fuck these people. Fuck them right into the hole they dug for themselves and/or their loved ones. And especially fuck the undocumented Grandma who urged her USC sons to vote for Trump because she was just so damn sure that he wouldn’t come after good honest Mexican grandmas like her, but would instead go after those damn Venezuelans who came more recently and got work permits right away. Fuck her right back to Mexico and let her Trump-voting would-be white supremacist sons (if only white supremacists would be so kind as to extend whiteness to people who are also Hispanic) take the grandkids to visit her in fucking Mexico. I hope she fucking collapses from shock (but doesn’t lose consciousness—I hope she’s conscious through the whole terrifying ordeal) when ICE throws her to the grounds, cuffs her, and crams her into the back of an unairconditioned van for transport to the airport for a 15 hour flight to Louisiana before she even gets a chance to call her sons, and try to tell them where she is or what happened, if only she could stop sobbing and just take a moment and breathe.
But truly, I hate to see anyone deported.
Too late to edit, but I want to apologize for some of the things I wrote in that post. It’s actually Nicaraguan (not Venezuelan) immigrants that the undocumented grandma (who can still fuck right off to ICE detention and deportation back to Mexico) thinks should be deported for getting work permits:
Rosa said she is glad her children voted for Trump. She’s not too worried about deportation, although she asked to be identified solely by her first name to reduce the risk. She believes Trump wants to deport criminals, not people like her who crossed the border undetected in the 1990s but haven’t gotten in trouble with the law. “They know who has been behaving well and who hasn’t been,” she said.
Fuck you, “Rosa.” I hope ICE finds out your real name soon enough and then we get to read about how your face was bitten off. And oh by the way, “Rosa,” if you haven’t registered yet and informed DHS where you live and that you’re in the US without lawful status, you’re a criminal too now!
Many, many moons ago I worked at a health center and they had a resident psychiatrist on staff to help those that needed mental support (and yes…a psychiatrist…not a psychologist).
I had drinks with her after work and I still remember her telling me that whenever someome says “but” ignore whatever came before it. “I love you but…” Ignore the I love you part and focus on what is said after that.
It might be a bit too strict but that advice has served me well over the years, as painful as it sometimes can be.
The triumph of hope over experience.
About the closest these yahoos could ever get to denouncing the Orange Peril would be to criticize the jackbooted thugs carrying out the pogrom (a variation on “If the Tsar only knew …”). In their minds, Trump never meant to deport those like them; but his very good brain is so wrapped up in such lofty endeavors as making China pay tariffs and adding Canada as the 51st state that he’s had to delegate getting the thugs & murderers out of the country. And Deep State operatives must be keeping him in the dark as to what’s going on, otherwise he’d put a stop to it toot sweet.
When I first saw that, I thought Trump had started deporting people here (I wouldn’t put it past him…): -
The fleecing of his cult members continues.
Trump’s cryptoscam netted over a half billion dollars shared by 58 early investors. 764,000 rubes lost money. Melanie’s cryptocoin only netted $350 million for 24 early investors. Poor girl.
I can understand to a point the naturalized citizens who support Trump - but if I’m reading this correctly the Mexicans who crossed the border illegally 30 years ago , have lived in the US ever since and who still have no legal status resent that other people, who may have crossed illegally but have received legal status are treated differently?
Sure, but that’s true for pretty much all of humanity.
We don’t group ourselves into the same tribes (usually racist ones) other people do. We group ourselves the way we see ourselves.
Immigrants from Mexico (or pretty much anywhere else) don’t think of themselves as being in the “immigrant” tribe. They may be immigrants but that’s not the group they associate themselves with. They group themselves with the “Mexico” tribe.
As such, why should anybody associate them with immigrants from Nicaragua (or wherever)? Why should a Korean immigrant worry about how Americans are angry about China and COVID? Those are different people from a different place. What they don’t get - what few of us get - is that it’s not how we group ourselves, it’s about how they lump us together with whoever. A few do get it, but most won’t.
I had a brush with face-about-to-be-eaten (minor) celebrity yesterday.
I’m eating nondescript breakfast out front of a nondescript café in a nondescript older strip mall. A Jeep pulls up with the windshield festooned with stickers. One of which appears to be a bad photoshop of the torso & head of a guy wearing a suit made from the American flag and giving the shaka hand gesture. With trump’s face plastered on badly.
The driver gets out. Heavyset older black woman wearing a t-shirt festooned with words I can’t quite read from my angle as she quickly passes. Also wearing a black leather vest like motorcycle clubs wear, also festooned with various patches about anything and everything. One I notice says “ALI”. For contrast a completely nondescript older black dude gets out of the other side; blue jeans and a plain colored t-shirt.
As they pass me and enter the restaurant I look at the back of her vest & see what looks like the typical motorcycle club emblem: a drawing in the middle and words in a curved banner above and below. The only word I catch from this walking sensory overload is TRUMP in big letters as part of the lower banner on her back.
WOW. WTF was that?
She had parked adjacent to my car. So I took the excuse of going to fiddle in my trunk so I could scope the rest of her vehicle unseen. Various black power and Nation of Islam stickers on the side. One celebrating “Blacks in America; since 1619” on the back and a couple more American flags, including the “Blue Lives Matter” version with black and gray stars & stripes and a single blue stripe.
And best of all there was an “@nametynamename” decal along the side in ~2" letters. Evidently identifying who she was. Not a name I recognized but I wrote it down for later.
A bit later I go inside to wash my hands. On the way I pass their table and that’s when I noticed her baseball cap. White, with a big ornate gold 47 on the front.
I’m a pretty observant guy; other people often comment on that, some positively, others negatively. But this person was such a sensory overload it’d have taken me staring for a couple minutes to take in all the symbols and words. I had totally missed that baseball cap the first time!
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you
I think the leopards will have done quite a number on her face and all her beliefs by the time this is over.
This part I understand. It’s a perfectly normal human reaction.
What I don’t get is supporting a politician who thinks you’re literal vermin because he also thinks the recent immigrants you dislike are vermin.
It’s hate all the way down. I feel like every Trump voter voted that way because there is someone they want hurt and Trump promised to hurt them.
