Surprises coming for voters for the Leopards-Eating-Faces Party

Helen Hayes should be getting Residuals!

I agree with you. I know tons of pro-choice women raised in very conservative families to be anti-abortion, and were, through high school-- some were even activists, and some remained so through college, but eventually reality changed their minds (that’s how one of them phrased it to me).

Try “disproportionately tiny” hands.

I’d argue that pushing for things opposed by the other side = standing for something.

But they usually don’t. They just obstruct the Republicans a little.

Clinton delivered a middle class tax cut. Both Obama and Clinton increased taxes on the rich. Both Obama and Clinton attempted healthcare reform; Obama succeeded, with an able assist from Nancy Pelosi. Biden’s climate policies, extensions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and stimulus directed at the lowest income groups were far from trivial.

Der’s claims appear to be directed at Democratic messaging, which I agree has problems. But then again, I’d push a moderate position on that score. Bang the drum on popular things like social security and medicare. Emulate Jared Golden of Maine, whose electoral performance beats his district’s PVI by the largest margin. In other words, ground your electoral strategy on stats, rather than feels.

In terms of rhetoric, I’m sympathetic to the arguments of Oliver Willis: use simple language and don’t shy away from causal language. "Republicans want to do [policy], because they want to [bad effect].

Run on popular things, govern with smart policy, have a conversation about the tradeoffs between good policy and popular electoral moderation. The Dems have shown a fair amount of political courage. Their climate efforts were not particularly popular, but they did them because the caucus had a pretty broad consensus that it was a challenge they needed to step up to in some way. Sean Casten of (IL-6) and Brian Schatz (HI) both had some illuminating things to say about that on twitter. When the ACA passed, some Dem reps lost their re-election. They were very much aware of the risk of voting for health care reform. And when they lost, at least one of them indicated that they had no regrets, because the issue was that important.

Fascism is worth opposing, and if opposing it means emulating Jared Golden, I’m all for it, customized for each district.

ETA: transplant Dem policies to any other high income democracy and they would be comfortably center-right.

British wife of Trump voter detained and facing deportation after 37 years in US

Now her husband, James Brown, said he now “100 per cent” regrets voting for Trump, effectively ensuring his wife being booted out of the States. “You look at the news, and they’re not telling the truth about what’s actually happening to a lot of legal immigrants,” he said.

Oh, you poor summer child. If only you had been warned that this would happen!

:crocodile: :droplet:

From the husband of the detained legal immigrant:

“Trump advertised that he was getting criminal illegal immigrants and deporting them, which I don’t disagree with. But that’s not what he’s doing,” said Brown. “There are hundreds, maybe thousands, who are being arrested who are legal immigrants in this country. And the entire foundation of America was founded on immigration. So now we’re saying that nobody who’s not native born should be allowed in this country.”

Yes sir. That is exactly the plan. Only native born US citizens. Unless they’re billionaires and/or personally known or useful to the cult leader.

At first.

Then, only white native born US citizens.

Then, only Christian white native born US citizens.

Then, only Protestant white native born US citizens.

Yes.

Somewhere in there anyone with Jewish ancestry will be declared non-citizens and deported to Israel, sort of but not quite like what happened Vichy, France.

Not entirely sure if they’ll keep some of the people recent African descent or send them elsewhere (Africa, Carribean, South America are all possibilities)

Not sure when/how the Asian-Americans will be removed. All sent back to CHYE-nyuh regardless of actual ethnic origins.

Alternatively - some darker-than-White people might be allowed to stay if they’re willing to accept second-class citizenship and convert to the “proper” version of Christianity. Because someone has to do the grubby jobs the lily-White can’t be soiled with.

The British woman, 59, immigrated to the US when she was 11. She is married to a US citizen. She committed a misdemeanor 10 years ago, which is the basis of the deportation.

Deporting someone like that is ridiculous, and deporting thousands like that is bad for the economy and cruel besides, which of course is the point.

I thought the husband showed poor judgment last November but characterized the situation fairly well and moreover fairly persuasively.

Since deporting recent African-Americans would mean deporting Obama, they’re definitiely not staying.

Sorry, I was unclear.

By “recent” I mean within the past roughly 400 years as opposed to people whose ancestors left African 20,000 or more years ago.

Nah, fuck that guy. He’s going to continue to vote R, trust me.

Oh, most of those would stay. Someone has to pick the cotton…

Insert LBJ quote here.

I don’t think I will trust you on that. Plenty of Americans swing their votes and the great majority of Americans are not political obsessives. So their support for either side is inherently soft.

The shift to Trump in 2024 was very broad geographically. Red districts, blue districts, purple districts - the overwhelming majority shifted towards Trump relative to 2020. You can posit any number of explanations for an electoral outcome, but US results are broadly in line with international patterns, suggesting that voters pinned the 2022-23 surge of inflation on incumbent parties.

Jeff Crank gets cranky. (after getting a leopard’s bite)

Republican Representative for Colorado Springs now finds out that one of the biggest employers in his city (Space Command) is moving out to go to Alabama.

Of course, Trump wanted to punish Colorado; but as always, Trump does not care if the leopard will eat the face of a supporter and enabler in this case.
