Ahem.
Here’s another. Perhaps we’re done here.
I mean, I can easily dig up more examples, and that’s just from Texas, where I’m familiar with the thriving German culture, so I’m sure other Dopers might have examples from other states.
Hey, fucking hell, don’t let facts get in the way of a good story, amirite?
ETA: I’m not sure about ‘thriving’, though. Texas German is a dying language, but that’s more to do with uninterested kids than any active destruction. Most of it is preserved by means of recordings from the last few extant speakers. They sure do like to celebrate their cultural heritage, though.
And the Pennsylvania Dutch aren’t from Holland, either.
Alive and well in Nebraska too.

You are so right. I really object to the insistence that the US is screwed, any other explanation is “fantasy” half the country is not onboard with trump/fascism. About 30% would die for him and think fascism and/or a dictatorship is the way to go. The rest of the country are not on board.
I cannot leave. Most the people I know and love cannot leave. Not everyone asked for or deserve the leopards.
As said above enjoy your escape, but don’t get too cozy if this country goes down.
I have to stay, thus I have to fight, but mostly I have to hope.
This is some bullshit. I don’t and I don’t think anyone else here are blind to what’s happening. We KNOW. For us it’s fight in whatever ways we can, or give up and lie down to die. You deciding that we’re all stupid, in denial, or are completely ok with what is happening appears to me as another rationalizatio for you to not give a fuck for our fate.
I choose to fight, for what it’s worth, and hope we can rebuild something better from the ashes. I’m sure that makes me delusional, and as deserving of our fate as a maga.
“I’m only one person. Nothing I do will make a difference,” said 300 million people.
There always is much defeatist atitude and derision directed towards any kind of activism, but using what little power we have is the only way to attain any goal.
Every single little right and privilege that is accorded to average citizens was fought for by people before us. They did not appear out of nowhere.
30% of the country would die for him. 30% are not on board. The other 40% are watching Netflix and ordering food delivery, and are sleepwalking into fascism.
Note: I’m sure YOU yourself and folks you know are in the 30% who are not on board. There are however, a shitload of people who are clueless or who just don’t really care all that much.
Of course, as I noted before, we need to only wake or convince about a 3% of the ones that voted for Trump to make a difference, the polls have been very consistent for months already, Trump is, among registered and likely voters: -5.7.
We need people to turn out; Dem turnout dropped more in 2024 vs 2020 than the GOP turnout did. Harris was leading amongst likely voters, IIRC.
No, in reality it was well within the error bars, I actually was weary as it was a statistical tie, and as it was the case, most of the undecided were convinced that the Democrats were not doing much about the economy. And the rest is history.
Of course now, by Trump and the Republicans “not giving a shit” about the economy and other issues, does not lead to magically make undecideds to go for Trump and Republicans as in 2024.
And my brother and father.
It’s just a little bit worse, they and we say every month. Every week. Every day.
Hmmm. I used to be an optimist. Still am but not about the USA Gov. The rest of the world may be well and truly screwed as well.
We are screwed for generations, that is IF we get through this current mess. IF.
I know that history is written by the winners, but there is no freaking way this administration and Trump could ever be called winners.
My hope is that historians hundreds of years in the future will write about and tell the world what a colosal fuck up Trump and his administration was. Also shout out that congress did notthing to stop him.
This is a good one. Utah farmer, Trump supporter, calls Hannity to complain that Trump’s policies are hurting him, and that none of the deals are real. Extra spicy sauce with Hannity trying to defend Trump.
The cherry on top is the farmer demanding more government assistance. I just love pointing out that farmers are the biggest welfare queens of them all.
Gaaaaa. What a couple of morons. Hannity trying to defend Trump, and the farmer voting against his (and our) own self interest. 'F 'em.
It will also fuck us, and that’s the problem.
If all those farmers go bankrupt you can be damn sure there are parties waiting in the wings to snap up that land. Private equity. Huge corporations. Foreign interests. None of those have the interests of the average American in mind.
Yep. All those people who have lots more free cash thanks to Trump’s Large Lousy Law’s tax cuts… will be able to invest it in farmland on the cheap.
Consider what’s been happening to housing costs because of similar issues after the Great Recession as an example…
And the current land holders do?
