Surveillance system questions

I posted a couple of weeks ago that someone took my iPod FM transmitter out of my car, and that an iPod car adaptor went missing s couple of months ago and a package was stolen from next to the mailbox. Enough is too much. I’ve decided to set up surveillance.

[ul][li]The DVR has BNC connectors on it, one per camera. The camera has three RCA plugs. I assume there’s an RCA-to-BNC adaptor available?[/li][li]Video out is a BNC connector. Do I need to get a monitor with BNC input, or can I use an adaptor similar to the one I assume exists for the camera?[/li][li]The DVR has a USB 2.0 port. Is this only for data transfer? Or is there an adaptor so that I can use it for connecting my non-USB monitor (currently attached to a PC I don’t use)?[/li][li]The DVR OS is stand-alone. Can I get a device so it can communicate with my Airport?[/li][li]How can I install a wireless camera?[/ul][/li]I think that’s it for now.

A bit more data would be helpful.
Was the DVR a special purchase? I hope not, as there are some good video capture cards with motion detection which are installed in a spare PCI slot of your computer. Stored video either goes into a partition of your main HDD or an accessory drive.
Yes, RCA to BNC is available, or you can make your own if you’re handy with a pencil soldering iron.
The video out should be ordinary 75 ohm, so you can match it up with a video monitor, or perhaps a TV, depending on specs for the DVR. Without some type of interface, the video output of the DVR isn’t going to work with a computer monitor.
The DVR USB port can likely be used for many things, including connection to external storage drives, or even remote monitoring via the Internet. Again, specs on the DVR would be helpful.
Airport comm? No clue.
Info on the camera would be helpful.

If you’d like, send me an email. I worked for an international banking equipment company for 10 years, and sell/install surveillance video equipment, along with burg/fire alarms and access control.

The DVR is a Q-See QDVR4MD. The camera I have is a Q-See QSOCWC. I do have a spare TV, but I was hoping to use my monitor. Oh, well.

Looking up the specs, I see that Video Output is 2 channel Composit BNC and USB 2.0 port.

Video Format: NTSC/PAL
Operating System: Stand alone
Camera Input Channel: 4 channel Composite BNC
Video Output: 2 channel Composit BNC and USB 2.0 port
Recording Frame Rates: NTSC, 120 frames, max 30 fps (quad); PAL, 100 frames, 25 fps (quad)
Record Modes: Continuous, Schedule, Motion Triggered, Sensor Triggered
Video Compression Format: Modified motion - JPEG (12-20 Kbytes/frame)
HDD Support: Over 200 GB, ATA-100 interface
PTZ: Yes, Pelco-D, Pelco-P
USB: Yes, USB 2.0 port for playback

A BNC question: The DVR came with four BNC connectors. How do I attach them to a cable? (The camera has a long cord with the RCA plugs, so this might not be critical.)

What type BNC? The ones that I use typically require soldering the center conductor to the BNC pin, and then fanning back the outer shield across and then sweeping around and in front of the BNC back nut, which is then tightened into the body of the male connector.

:smack: Never mind. I was looking for an image and I discovered that what I have is actually an RCA-to-BNC adaptor.

So only one of the camera’s RCA plugs is used?

Re: the camera cord. There’s a red and a yellow RCA plug. The third (black) plug is not an RCA and seems to be the power for the infrared emitters.
