Survey: Four in 10 American Adults Play Video Games

I don’t play any online games (sometimes Guild Wars) because I don’t like the fees. But I also put in at least an hour of games most days. Mostly you’ll find me in the middle of older Final Fantasy games, or maybe one of my Spyros, or perhaps something on my computer. I get a lot of value out of certain games - replay value is very important to me.

I probably spend around $3000 on gaming a year, it’s my last genuine nerd outlet. I don’t have as much time to play as I did years ago, so when I can get a night to myself to geek out I like to have decent stuff.

I played Everquest years ago, but would only vaguely toy with the idea of going back into online games; they’re just massive timesinks that eat into your life. I prefer to see what’s going on with the latest studio release.

Probably 15-20 most weeks, 20-30 or more during weeks I have something to review. I don’t necessarily play each day, but I usually get plenty of hours in on the weekends.

I probably play 10-20 hours a week, but some weeks I won’t play at all… some weeks are filled with gaming. I play online (world of warcraft) and I have multiple consoles. Right now I’m replaying Final Fantasy X.

My husband plays around 40-50 hours a week (mostly while I’m at work or sleeping). The chores get done, he’s always on time to work, the dog gets walked, and I get attention, etc. so it doesn’t bother me. Saves us a LOT in movie rental fees. We have a tv, dvd player and mini-fridge between our two computers so we just sit and watch our movie collection for free rather than going out to rent movies every week. We spend $150 a year on him to play Warcraft, but we spent $10-20 a week on movies before that.

I’d have to answer “0-2” because I play zero online or video games. The only time I ever play is to help one if the kids if they get stuck, but they haven’t asked for help in a long time.

About 30 hours. I watch no television though.

For me, it seems to go in spurts. At the moment: no gaming whatsoever (I spend waaay too much time on the internet, though). However, I did recently have a very bad period hooked on The Sims 2. And when “Spore” comes out (hopefully) in the beginning of next year, I’ll be cancelling all other appointments for six months straight.

I just never got the hang of that “moderation” thing…

I read a news item recently ( don’t remember where ) that says approximately 5 million people worldwide play WOW online at any given time. And that there are only 4 million people in Ireland. Rather a sobering item, isn’t it?

None.

Seriously, none.

Last video game I played regularly was Mortal Kombat II when I was working at Photon. I kicked ass. I was also very good on the Terminator 2 pinball game. Of course, I also played Photon while I was working at Photon, but that’s not really a video game.

I’m pretty sure the 5 million number is total subscriptions, not simultaneous use. Not sure what the simultaneous use number is.

It really depends on things like the weather, what is on TV and what are my friends doing.
On average I think I play about 4-5 hours a week, mostly on Saturday-afternoon when I get out of bed.
I spend anywhere between 1000 and 2000 Euro’s a year on gaming.
I am afraid this year will be very expensive, if the PS3 gets released and lives up to my expectation. (I will get a Wiiii no matter what).

I play an average of about 2 hours a day during the week and double that on each weekend day. Used to be much more until I got married, bought a house, a boat, a quad, and had a baby. Where does the time go!?

I’m in an unusual demographic, female and 51. A couple years ago I played Final Fantasy XI online for 6 months, at least 4 hours a day, often twice or three times that.

I bought a monster gaming computer last month and now play Oblivion primarily, although I haven’t yet finished Fable: The Lost Chapters. If I ever tire of Oblivion I’d like to try Morrowind. I have Dreamfall: The Longest Journey up next, or as a break from rpg. I’ve got a big backlog of older adventure games I may never get to at this rate.

I switch off between waves of gameplaying and waves of reading. I’m playing Oblivion 0-3 hours a day lately, although I played a lot more the first 3 weeks.

I’m 20 and I spent waaay too much time playing computer games. But I watch very little TV. During the semester the only times I watched TV was with my girlfriend. Also, even if I didn’t spend so much time playing games, I truly doubt I would be doing anything productive with my free time.
I would say I spend 2 to 3 hours a day playing either Counter-Strike:Source or Day of Defeat: Source. I’ve been wanting to get Oblivion but I don’t think my video card could take it.

I was going to try to quantify adulthood to mean anyone above the age of 18 who is self sufficient but I’m not sure what can of worms that would open.

Since I’m 47 I’m in an age group where it’s not AS prevailant for adults to play video games. If you went back to my parents age bracket that would probably be almost zero with the exception of card games.

I’ve been known to play 15 minutes of Free Cell or PinBall. Even played Myst once and enjoyed it. I’ve never played any other modern computer game for the same reason I never go to arcades. Just not something I do. Forgot flight Simulator but not sure if that counts because I’m a pilot and it’s interesting to fly actual locations.

Female, 27, 3-4 hours per day, easy. Often more. I have no job, however. Though lately I’ve been spending most of my energy on resumes and cover letters, since I’m now legal to work.

I play online games (EQII and Guild Wars) as well as console/PC games. Even when I have a job, I play a lot of games. I was raised around video games since I was a toddler. I’ve never lived in a home without some kind of gaming console.

None, unless you count Neopets. Then, less than an hour a week.

Absolutely none. They don’t interest me in the least.
