survivor benefits

A few people have recently told me my son SHould be getting survivor benefits since my son’s father died when my son was 8 months old.
I called today, and they said he didn’t earn enough during his life so forget it.
(He was on disability for the last few years)

People have also said Social Security would try to keep us from getting benfits no matter what, and to get legla help.
So I am going to go to Legal Aid to see whats up.
Is this true?
If you didn’t earn enough, your child gets nothing?
Or, like some folks say, they just don’t like to pay out?
I have been unemployed for 10 years!

Here is what looks like the most relevant FAQ from the Social Security Website.

Looking the page over, my impression is that if the parent is not eligible for benefits in life, neither is the survivor.

However, I am not a lawyer, nor do I profess any expertise in this area. I am only expressing a layman’s interpretation.
