Survivor: Palau - Premiere Feb 17

Well, a more thorough explanation would deviate substantially from the topic of this thread and would border on an outright hijack, but I’ll see if I can put something together for you tomorrow morning.

Yep. Plus, the trailer is infested with fleas.

The decision to chose another beach has to rank as one of the dumbest Survivor choices ever. They traded a ready made shelter and known water source for a complete unknown situation.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

But in previous Survivors taking the unknown has come with big rewards. That’s probably what they’re banking on.

Deafness is unique amoung the human ‘disabilities’ in that it is the only ‘disability’ which is not viewed as such by a large subset of the people who possess this physical characteristic. Culturally Deaf people do not view themselves as being disabled—they view themselves as a cultural minority with their own language and shared set of cultural values and history. Deaf people are proud to be Deaf, and frequently do not want the ability to hear, even if that ability could somehow be granted to them. This concept of self-identity is completely incomprehensible to almost all hearing people.

Deaf people are therefore offended by any suggestion that they are incapable of doing something simply by virtue of the fact that they are deaf. They are also offended when they are referred to as being ‘hearing impaired,’ because they do not consider the inability to hear to be of any real consequence. Since they don’t care that they can’t hear, they view a hearing person referring to a Deaf person as ‘hearing impaired’ as being almost a nonsensical statement. To a Deaf person, it is tantamount to a woman telling a man that he is ‘reproductively impaired.’

All Deaf people react with defensiveness and hostility towards social rejection and ostracism. And all Deaf people have been treated at one point or another with the same lack of acceptance that Jenna and Heidi displayed towards Christy Smith. Every deaf person who watched S6 understood exactly what Christy was experiencing, and the anger and psychological pain that she felt. Christy’s despair was further compounded by the fact that she is an extremely sensitive and empathetic person, who in some ways views the world in an almost childlike manner.

You may recall that the popular media portrayed the Deaf community as being disappointed with Christy Smith’s behavior as a contestant, in that she did not display enough ‘Deaf pride.’ This is only marginally true. While a few Deaf militants were critical of Christy, the overwhelming majority of Deaf viewers strongly rallied behind her. They were just as contemptuous of Jenna and Heidi’s behavior towards Christy as was Christy herself. Any culturally Deaf person placed in that situation would have reacted in the same manner. Christy’s reaction towards the stepsister’s rejection of her was perfectly normal coming from a Deaf person, and in actuality was fairly restrained. A true Deaf militant would have responded far more vehemently.

Dolly was the sheep farmer. That isn’t her real name, by the way. Nobody called her Dolly until she inherited the sheep farm, from what I understand. Heidi was from the Amazon season, and had implants bigger than her brain.

Washoe – Thanks for your comments about Christy. You alluded to her “real reasons” for voting for Jenna… what were they? That’s always bothered me.

I can understand why most of the Jury thought Jenna played better than Matt, even though I thought she was hateful. But I was completely shocked that Christy voted for her and I never heard a good explanation.

Heh. Sounds like racial stereotypes aren’t the only kind Burnett likes to exploit.

Sorry guys, I goofed with the fantasy Survivor info. I didn’t realize it was case sensitive and that I created the tribe StraightDope rather than Straightdope. If anyone would like to join, use that tribe name and the password monster.
