Over the last few weeks, I’ve been getting strange e-mails inmy Hotmail account.
One will be an e-mail from somebody I’ve never heard of, or even a nonsense name. It is always more than 100k in size! Odd, inexplicable or incomprehensible subject.
The second will either be from a university I have no connection to, or from a firm I don’t know, with the word “virus” in the subject. Usually 1 to 2 k in size.
I haven’t opened any of them. Just blocked/deleted them.
I haven’t been getting any with that subject… but is it a hijack to say what I have been getting?
The Klez virus is sent to me at least five times a day. Thankfully Norton picks up on it. The real problem is that there’s no way to tell where it’s from because it uses addresses from the outlook express address book to spoof the return address.
My only hope is that whoever the source is will eventually get their computer corrupted so bad, it’s rendered inoperable.
Haven’t gotten anything quite like those, but I really hate the ones that come from a first name only and say “Hello.” I just delete those now without looking at them.
Today I got another MLM (multi-level marketing, aka pyramid scheme) mail. I wonder how many people actually bite on those?
*Bosda a customer of ours had the Klez virus and every time she logged on to her e-mail, Klez would do its thing and we’d get a message that looked like it was from our own postmaster (since the “postmaster” is ME, I knew better and just delted them messages.) Sometimes the messages would indeed come in pairs. She has since had her computer fixed and it’s no longer a problem.
It’s possbile someone has a virus like Klez and the same thing happens. Alternatively, some bastard has your e-mail on a spam list and they’re sending you the same crap daily (we’re in the process of assigning a new e-mail address to someone who gets a “FREE Panties!” advert every other day – like clockwork.)
Keep it blocked in any case. Either way it’s annoying and you probably don’t wanna open it.
Yes! I’ve been getting the exact same thing lately. The file will be at least 120k but when I open the email there’s nothing there. No text, no attachment, nothing. So I’ve been deleting them right away, for fear of it being a virus as well. So far, not much has happened except for a pop-up thing that’s been telling me that I need to download the Microsoft Virtual Machine to view the page properly. I’m not sure if they’re connected… hmmm…
This is probably an automated response from their email virus checker.
It means someone who knows you has Klez and it is sending itself out using your address. The university or company traps Klez, and sends you back a ‘reply’ to warn you have a virus. Except, of course, it isn’t you that has it at all.
The first example you give there is almost certainly a Klex email.
All it means is people you know have Klez. You need to try and figure out who do you know that might have a contact at the university or company.
