Swamp Thing/ Swamp Ape on the BBC

This morning I woke up bleary-eyed, grabbed some breakfast and flicked on the BBC World service to see what was happening in the news. This normally reputable channel greeted me with grainy footage of a shaggy bear-like form bounding through waist-high reeds at an impressive speed.

It did not look like easy terrain, although it was level. What is going on here? I have not been able to find the video on the Internet yet (I guess it is very new–can anyone help?) but I saw the TV broadcast and this guy (in a Gorilla suit?) was MOVING!

Here is the BBC article:

Can anyone give us the straight dope? And the link to the video? Is it just me or was that guy moving really fast?

This site has a still from a 1968 film. That’s the best I can do.

Guess what, Abe? You’ve just stumbled upon the Bigfoot controversy. I notice that your profile says that you live in Hong Kong, so I guess you might not have heard much about this. In short, people have been seeing Bigfoot (aka Sasquatch) ever since Colonial times, and there are alot of Native American stories about them, but their existance has never been scientifically proven. Alot of scientists think that the whole phenomena is a hoax, mostly because noone’s ever caught one. There is, however, a fair amount of circumstantial evidence, like tracks, photos, and a few vidoes. The BBC story is about the most recent video. Most Bigfoot sightings are in the US Northwest and in Canada, but they are sometimes seen in the Florida Everglades, where they’re known as “swamp apes” or “skunk apes.”

Thanks! I still have not been able to find the video I saw on the BBC. The whole Bigfoot mystery has to be one of America’s biggest exports–in fact, something similar is reported in the Himalayas.

I am definitely a skeptic when it comes to lost civilizations, Bigfeet, magic, UFOs, and so forth. But the video I saw on the BBC programme was very interesting. This large shaggy shape was bounding in a striclty bipedal fashion at a very high speed through waist-high reeds.

There has to be some sort of explanation. I suspect that the media are simply going to let this story die and report it in a few years again, when another sighting/hoax takes place. I’d love to hear people’s comments on that video–I just caught it as I was having breakfast. It attracted my attention because the BBC, a normally reputable channel, actually dedicated a segment of its World Service to the story.

It is called a SKUNK APE. Here are some good links to learn more:

I haven’t seen the video, but they say that the creature was moving pretty fast. If it is a man in a suit, he’d have to be really, really strong to move quickly through waist-high foliage.
