Sweet Home Alabama -- not the movie

We are meeting friends this week in Eufaula, Alabama. Do any of you have suggestions on what to do there? Favorite restaurants or side trips? Anything???

Please bump this from time to time between now and Sunday. I’m desperate!

Thanks!

Where the skys are so blue.

bump

skies

where is this place? I live in north alabama and have never head this name. I am guessing it is a smaller town?

No can help with no data my friend.

Well there’s a statue of Leroy Brown, a fish so well-loved that 700 people showed up at his funeral. Sounds like my kinda town.

Osip, Eufaula is right on the Georgia border below Phenix City/Columbus.

Unfortunately, Zoe, I have no idea what enticements Eufaula might offer a visitor - a glance at my atlas shows Lakepoint Resort State Park a few miles north, something called Tom Mann’s Fish World, something else called the Shorter Mansion, and Lake Eufaula, which I guess is a . . . lake.

Maybe a web search on Eufaula, Alabama might turn up something?

Of course, you can always drive across the Georgia line and buy scratch-offs and lottery tickets!

Leroy Brown is part of a bigger attraction known as Tom Mann’s Fish World. I haven’t been there, but I understand you can tour the world’s largest freshwater aquarium there, among other things. I believe they offer a “special package tour” there, including the aquarium, Leroy Brown statue, and an afternoon of fishing with Tom and Tina Mann. This will probably set you back about $2,000, but aquarium only tours are reasonable, I believe.

There are also a lot of historic homes that you can tour in Eufaula, which you can read about here.

Actually, I’ve never been to Eufaula, I only know about this stuff because I considered stopping by there last summer when I was down south.

One place that I do highly recommend is Providence Canyon (in Georgia), about a 30-40 mile drive from Eufala. Back in the mid 1800’s, all of the trees were cleared out of this area for farming. One thing led to another, and a runaway erosion process began; the result today are some absolutely beautiful gullies, about 150 feet deep. I’ve never seen anything like this anywhere else east of the Rockies; it’s kind of like you’re driving around Georgia, make a wrong turn, and wind up in Utah. There’s a 3 mile trail that goes around and down into the canyon, you can take side hikes out from the trail and into the actual gullies. Here are some more nice pictures:

I once spent a week in Eufaula on a work assignment. Depending on what your taste in entertainment is, you may be in for a dry spell.

There are many old homes there, tours of them are offered frequently, and some serve lunch as part of the tour.

The Lakepoint Park is good for fishing, and there are boat rentals.

If you are looking for after-hours entertainment, I’d suggest bringing some videos along, or be prepared to rent some. After dark, things are pretty much closed up.

In short, it’s a nice, quiet small town located on a big lake. If you need to buy gas, drive across the river bridge to Georgia, as the State tax is much lower there.

I hope you LIKE the people you are going to be visiting with, 'cause there are not many distractions!

Here is my suggestion, visit other friends…
Alabama- ick.

And a nice, big, fat, smiling welcome to the SDMb to you, preacherswife

oops, sorry John Carter…
That’s what happens when you transplant a Damn Yankee into the South-
We make arses of ourselves…

Ok, everybody gets one freebie. Peace, Sistuh.

Thanks a million JC- maybe I will give the state another chance. Ever been to Opp?

Thank you all so much! I didn’t think my plea would get any responses. Looks like we take along a deck of cards…

The canyon in Georgia sounds worth the trip. The photos are amazing! And the idea of having meals with a house tour appeals to me.

I think the guys are going to be doing some fishing so I will point them in the right direction. I’m afraid we are stuck with these particular friends. They are family.

And thanks for the links!

Preacherswife, welcome to SDMB! Do give Alabama a good chance. The area around Cherokee is very nice. I think that is where the Appalacians end. Lake Guntersville is very relaxing and there are chalets and a lodge. Monte Sano (outside of Huntsville) has cabins in the woods. The pines are abundant. If all else fails, go to Scottsboro. All items from lost baggage in the States go to one large store there. Good bargains!
