Swift boating John McCain

I thought McCain had already been Swiftboated back before the 2000 elections when he was trying for the Republican nom against GWB?

By the way, swiftvets are great for cleaning floors.

A Times article showing the swiftboaters lied and no one could actually believe them. Kerry said compiling the evidence to refute the swifties took til after the election.

Once again, we’re reminded that 19th century political cartoons weren’t particularly subtle.

Would that old Barry was still around. I think his head would explode. (Wasn’t he one of the ones who protested the religious right when it first started to take hold?)
(Yes, I’m still a lefty. Don’t get too excited.)

Where do your parents live? Just out of idle curiosity.

(BTW, if they seem to act disoriented in the next month, think nothing of it; it’s all part of the aging process.)

Like hell it is!

Goldwater was the most libertarian candidate since George Washington. He was definitely Swiftboated with that nuclear bomb ad. And you’re right that he would not recognize his party today, which is what Paul is trying to tell people.

Of course, that’s when LBJ was the peace candidate…

Whereas Bill Clinton turns into a Woomba!

Honestly, sometimes I feel sorry for him. Especially after watching the HBO movie, Path to War. The war just wore him down, as the weekly stacks of letters-to-home on his desk grew over the course of the movie to nearly a foot tall. Meanwhile, his Great Society was withering away. He eventually came to despise the phrase.

There was a scene of him with his closest advisors (including the infamous McNamara) watching a presentation from one of the Pentagon generals, who was talking over a slide-show. Amidst all the images of tanker ships in harbors, aerial shots of Hanoi, and other wartime targets was a picture of an old woman on a bicycle whom the general said was delivering ammunition to the Viet Cong.

Then came a slide with scores of trucks parked in a lot just outside Hanoi. McNamara was pointing out how fruitful bombing Hanoi would be. “We could take out a huge percentage of their trucks at this location alone.”

“Trucks!?” Johnson shouted, spitting venom as he pounded the table. “They don’t NEED any goddamn trucks. They got little old ladies on BICYLCES hauling ever’thang around for ‘em. What the hell am I supposed to do, bomb old fuckin’ WOMEN!?”

It was all downhill from there.

Curiously, he didn’t show up in subsequent cavity searches.

What???

From what I recall of grade school history class, the GOP was founded as a radical alternative to the then-moderate Democratic party. They started out favoring such things as equality for women, allowing all citizens to vote, opposition to slavery, and big government override of states that wanted to keep slavery.

Hardly “conservative roots” at all!

Well I thought my citing my parents reporting what they heard on the radio as a cite that was good enough for the pit, but I poked around and it is likely that Ted Sampley was the originator of the McCain didn’t suffer as a POW.

I don’t listen to right wing radio (I went to college), but I did find this nugget :

“In 1992, Sampley wrote a long article that portrayed McCain as a “Manchurian candidate,” who had betrayed America to the North Vietnamese and then enlisted as a secret Communist agent. But it wasn’t until seven years later that the celebrated Navy pilot and ex-POW found out how much damage such smears could inflict. After McCain declared his presidential candidacy in 1999, Sampley revived the “Manchurian candidate” smear as a convenient weapon for the Senator’s political enemies. Some of them, including the prominent conservative Paul Weyrich and Richard Mellon Scaife’s Newsmax Web site, didn’t hesitate to pick up the slimy stuff generated by Sampley. The fringe assault on McCain, amplified by the likes of Weyrich and talk radio, caused grave injury to his campaign during the pivotal South Carolina primary.”
Sampley has been a guest on many right wing radio shows and has been cited by Rush Limbaugh on his radio show.

They live in Virginia and spend all day listening to Rush, and whatever right wing radio station he is on there. During the 2000 primary, there was all kinds of crazy things coming out about McCain being a collaborator and they duly reported them to me (it’s a big part of the reason I tend to see them once a year).

John McCain doesn’t know the meaning of the word “surrender”.

I mean, literally. He doesn’t know what it means.

Really? That often?

I need to stay in the will.

Ah! The Triumph of the Will.
