I immediately flashed on a movie quote: This ain’t good for the tourist trade, you know. Tell that to your Ohio friend!
That was my point, not that one isolated incident happened to an exchange student 21 years ago, or that we have horrific things happen to people here.
My point was that “less developed” places like India and Mexico have places more or less beyond the reach of the law which are known for “banditry” or where bandidos hijack buses and shake down everyone on them.
I’d say it’s ridiculous, but that implies that it’s worthy of ridicule, which it isn’t. Worthy of condemnation is more appropriate, for a country that claims not to be “3rd world(low HDI or whatever that means) anymore.”
Ultimately, regardless of whether you have a low HDI or whatever that means, if you have areas which are beyond the law, have people shitting on the train tracks because a large segment of your population without plumbing, you have a long way to go to get on par with actual developed nations.
You be careful out there among the English.
never mind.
South Detroit? Who are you, Steve Perry?
If rapes are going on in South Detroit, you need to discuss that with our Canadian friends.
I once made the mistake of camping in an isolated (but not enough) area of north Georgia known for “buggery”.
Did not go well. Though the whitewater and scenery were kinda nice.
Because its really boring?
Understatement and victim blaming all in one post! Amazing
you dont understand. They went exploring that extremely unsafe area on bicycle. They were practically asking for trouble. I’ve been reading comments on this topic. Majority of them have to say exactly the same.
Similar to this incident, last year, two Italians got themselves kidnapped(later got released) in India by wandering into the naxal affected area.
Its an embarrassing reality abt some parts of India.

“Got themselves kidnapped”:smack:
Its so stupid that I wrote like that on purpose.
Hahhh!
Victim blaming in the sense Americans use it doesn’t exist as a concept anywhere else in the world, I’m not talking about stuff like saying “she was wearing a skirt she was asking for it” but more general “what were they doing in this area?!”.
I’ve seen official crime prevention PSAs that people would probably call victim blaming.
It’s not “victim blaming” to think that someone should do a little research into an area they will be traveling so they know what is safe! Or is it only “victim blaming” because it was a woman who was raped?
Whether it was a man or woman, sexual assault or not, what happened to them was brutal and telling the victims that they were asking for it or should have known better because of the area is insensitive and unnecessary. You don’t think they realize that now?
Just because other dbags on the internet are saying the same thing it doesn’t make it right.
That wasn’t what I was talking about.
So?
I’ve seen American cops who refuse to investigate rapes because they think a 15 year old girl being carried to a party unconscious, violated by a group calling themselves The Rape Crew, and urinated on probably wanted it. It’s still fucked up.
Also, there are lots and lots of other places in the world where victim blaming as a concept exists. For you to say otherwise only serves to further highlight your stupidity on this topic.
Ever wish you could un-read something?
I was trying to explain the attitude, not endorsing it. I’m just saying if you want to be flabbergasted by this attitude well you’ll have plenty to keep you busy.
I’m not clear what you mean by “Also, there are lots and lots of other places in the world where victim blaming as a concept exists.” because I was basically saying its the most prevalent attitude around the world.
