Swiss tourist gang-raped in India

This can’t be food for tourism. A Swiss woman who was camping with her husband in a forest in Madhya Pradesh was gang-raped by 8 men, who also beat her husband and robbed them. There’s a picture of her being escorted to hospital by policewomen in what looks like a burqa-beekping outfit.

Probably to keep her face out of the media, at a guess.

Not a guess – if you expand the picture, you’ll see a caption which says that the hood is to protect her identity, as Indian law requires.

unfortunate incident. all but 1 perpetrators have been caught n hope they are soon given the punishment as per the law.
stupidity shown by the tourists, that particular area is known for banditry. Why would anyone roam around there on bicycles.

Because the Swiss are inherently gullible and trusting, possibly even higher than Scandinavians, who believe that their peaceful, educated lifestyle insulates them from the reality of other places. Americans are high on that list but more wisely afraid of wandering in places where the culture might turn and bite them on the ass at any moment.

Being white, Euro, educated and having benign intentions means something between jack and shit in most of the third world… and Jack’s smart enough to stay out, stay in a group or use a high level of caution.

I didn’t know that area was known for banditry.

Banditry? Seriously?

Shouldn’t India be spending more money on stopping this shit and improving public sanitation than building nuclear weapons?

chambal valley area, where this incidence has happened, is notorious all around India for being inflicted with decoits. in 2012, very famous, award winning hindi movie ‘Paan Singh Tomer’ was made on this place. you ask any guy on the street in India(n they should have, since they were going in a forest area), I am quite he\she will tell the tourist were practically asking for trouble by exploring this area on bicycle.

money is not the problem. there’s enough money for nuclear weapons, space program etc as well as for development and for public welfare. problem is of transparency and honesty in implementation. There are various parts which have seen high growth n unfortunately, this is not one of them.

yes, you got it. we, the people of the third world, look for every opportunity to rape, loot and trick educated n sophisticated people i.e. Europeans and Americans.

At least she wasn’t eaten.

Nice victim blaming.

And yet here you seem to be sarcastically implying that traveling in rural India isn’t an invitation to gang rape. Which is it?

Yeah. Like the U.S.

Yes, and what’s more, no highly civilized westerners of any US inner city would think of being less than kindly of any foreign tourist who came to see the sights in South Detroit, Watts, the Tenderloin or most back streets of NYC.

There’s a big difference between having low income, high crime areas, which every country has, and having parts of the countryside known for “banditry”.

Even at that, if a tourist blundered into the roughest parts of New Orleans, Baltimore, Camden, or Detroit, odds are that if anything happened at all, they’d be robbed, not gang raped.

there are places which are extreme safe - Kerala, Goa, Bangalore, practically all of south India, mumbai etc.
places which are safe - punjab, Himachal, J&k, Rajasthan, Delhi - ok, controversial, most urban centers
places which are extreme unsafe - chambal valley, Naxal affected areas of Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand etc
I am saying - be smart, inquire about the places you are going to visit on internet, with your friends or with local people. Pay heed to their advice. What the tourists did was certainly not smart. Also, India is not 3rd world(low HDI or whatever that means) anymore.

And its sad and unfortunate what happened to the tourist, my heart goes out to the couple and that any such incident is deeply embarrassing for the country irrespective of whether it hits tourism industry or not.
I hope tht justice is meted out soon to the culprits.

I think Indian rape news was trending down but white tourist rape news has a certain je ne sais quoi that everyone can enjoy.

Or one might be shot for walking up to the wrong house.

That’s just silly. But try again.

As horrible as that story was, it didn’t involve a tourist wandering into the wrong part of the country. (I’d still advise foreign visitors from going to East Texas, for entirely different reasons.)
