Sword & Sorcery control thread

So we don’t clutter up the story thread.

Locations
Alberia: mainland country closest to Mulveria. Politics unknown.

Albersville: large Alberian port city.

Balisuria, Conispur, and Donnelsport: other islands in the same chain as Mulveria, colonized as the population on the big island needed more resources. Three of the four that splintered from Mulveria during the first civil war.

Zatistan: hilly country, presumably quite a distance from Mulveria.

People
Alberians and Mulverians: essentially human.

Zati: humanoid, in the style of the traditional RPG elf (tall, slender, with an affinity for magic).

What was in Erik’s package
Not exactly sure. Whatever it is, coupled with his dreams of late it’s enough for him to want to find his true lineage.

Orindal: Mulverian fishing village.

Good luck with this.

I would put a link in the story thread to this one - otherwise budding authors may dive straight into the story unprepared.

P.S. What is the technology level?
What fantastic monsters are known?

Mostly akin to 15th Century England. Gunpowder is known but has yet to be put to practical use (i.e.: currently used for fireworks, not firearms).

Certainly a few dragons scattered about.

Most dragons are protected. All are intelligent and reclusive; the amount of both correspond directly to their size. The smallest are the size of the fabled Pegasus and, if found, can be domesticated for riding if one has the time and inclination.

I’m also thinking Erik must have step siblings, but he is obviously not a royal heir. He was raised by King Jakob and Queen Zugala, but isn’t their child.

Given that he was found two years into their marriage there could be at most only one stepsib older than Erik, but there could be several younger.

Quite right.

Gives me an idea…

Zosti: Zati of mixed parentage. Occasionally used disparagingly if the subject is of a lower social standing than the speaker; those who do use the term in this manner are widely viewed as ignorant.

Shaladora/Shaladoro: a female/male who has forged a friendship with a Shaladar.

Shaladista/Shaladisto: a female/male whose friendship with a Shaladar is so strong that the latter volunteers to be ridden.

Shaladon (not used in the story yet): general term for one who works alongside, or atop, a Shaladar or some other small Drache.

One doesn’t need to be adept like a Zati in order to befriend Draches but it helps. A mind that is adept to magic is the most open to Drache, making it that much easier to form a connection between the two. Larger Drache sometimes act as an intermediary between their small cousins and prospective Shaladons, particularly if the large Drache senses something special in a non-adept. Karin certainly is an adept but, being Zosti, would have some trouble locating a Shaladar on her own.

Vadi: a female Shalla Vorda (“Silver Giant”).

Some known Drache breeds:

Vorda Drache “Giant Dragon”
Shalla Vorda, usually seen in and around large bodies of water but have been known to venture far inland at night. Originally gave rise to reports of sea monsters.
Mira Vorda “Black (literally ‘Dead’) Giant”, rarely seen outside of the deepest ocean waters. The color of their hide resembles the skin of a deceased Zati.

Tova Drache “Large Dragon”
Shalla Tirar “Silver Tongued”, the tricksters of the Drache world. Watch your back around them lest you wind up on your backside. Can be dangerous but usually just unpleasant.

Skola Drache “Standard Dragon”
Rochabalar “Redbellied”, last seen in the vicinity of active volcanos.

Spira Drache “Small Dragon”, the rideables
Shaladar “Silverbacked”, the one that started it all and still the preferred companion of all Shaladons. These days, the only large gatherings of Shaladar or their riders can be seen in paintings depicting the assault on Albersville. Such paintings are much more fiction than fact.
Bolto Calor “Blue Footed” (literally “Blue Clawed”)
Ligotaro “Yellowtail”
Kalama “Chameleon”, has pigments that can be changed at will. Finding one, making friends with it, and getting to the point where it volunteers to be ridden was once considered to be the ultimate challenge. They are now the only Spira to be protected. It’s still possible for a Shaladon to be associated with a Kalama but the Drache needs to be the one to instigate the relationship and the Shaladon needs a permit.

Tannet Vaden: mountainous country far from Mulveria. Vadentiens are essentailly human with elements of Tolkien’s dwarfs.

Shae: an honorific given to the head of an educational facility; essentially “headmaster”.

You didn’t say the story was going to have zombies in it.

That’s the trouble with these stories of late. When “finish the story” threads were first started, we’d get at least five regular contributors and the threads would move along at a brisk pace, often requiring previews to see if someone else snuck a post in while one was being composed. Now, with just Baker and me as regular contributors, the threads can go several months between entries.

Just a note, that may come in handy for plot devices. Karin is the oldest child of the king and queen, and Julian, the only boy, is the youngest. But there will be at least three other princesses, between the age of Erik(who is not a prince) and Julian, because it was mentioned that Queen Zukala had four girls before she bore Julian. Julian is mentioned as being eleven years old, and the age of Karin and Erik is not stated, but if they are, say twenty or twenty one, or even a little younger, then the queen had three girls at a fairly fast clip, and they are likely at that annoying teenage stage.

As suggested, Moe the mouse isn’t what he appears.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

As indicated by the inclusion of the Wayre from our Sci-Fi stories, we are shifting from the latter to the former.

As stated in the introduction, Erik recently turned eighteen, making Karin nearly 19. Maybe Zukala had twins at one point?
