And now I’m glad I did. I’ve finally gotten the chance to listen to the Tragically Hip, Son Volt and several other great bands I might never have gotten the chance to hear! I can’t believe TH isn’t known in the US. They’re good!
Does anyone here like alt.country and have any suggestions on what songs I should DL?
Ooh, alt.country! You’ll need some WILCO to round things out!
Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar were both in Uncle Tupelo. When it split up, Farrar formed Son Volt and Tweedy formed Wilco. I’d start you out with something from Being There - maybe “Far, Far Away” or “Was I in Your Dreams” if you’re looking for slowish songs. “Casino Queen” and “Passenger Side” from A.M. are great, too. Summerteeth, their latest album, is more alt than country, IMO, but I like it a whole lot. “Via Chicago” and “She’s a Jar” are great to start with. Oh, hell, just go out and buy all three cds, okay?
As for other bands, have you heard the Pernice Brothers or Scud Mountain Boys (the earlier incarnation)? Vic Chesnutt is a GREAT songwriter (check out “Sponge” or “Isadora Duncan”), as is Pete Droge (“Fourth of July”). The BoDeans are worth looking into as well, and Drivin ‘n Cryin’. Oh, and don’t forget Gram Parsons.
There’s a great big alt.country world out here. Welcome!
You have joined us on The Dark Side. Now get ready to crash. Get Napigator. There is a thread in IMHO with a bunch of Doper Napster names but I’m to lazy to search. Also I’m downloading as we, um, speak. If I try to search, only The Pink Invisible Unicorn will know what’ll happen.
