Sydney is burning - yet again

It’s kind of scary that this time last year I started a thread about Sydney being ringed by fire.

To the NZ and US firefighters who are currently on their way here to help us fight these fires (which are WAY worse than last year’s), a very big thank you.

To everyone else, please pray for us all or send us good wishes and in particular for the men and women who are fighting these firestorms. Last year’s fires were bad; these ones are - quite simply - terrifying. And every single one of those men and women who are out there risking their lives in the face of these firestorms deserves a medal - I just hope that we don’t lose any of them.

Oh no… I have relatives down there. Last year the fires were only an hour outside of where they lived (somewhere not far from Sydney is all I really know). I hope it passes them by… this year would be fun trying to escape that with their new baby and their eldest.

OF, if you need to find out whether your relatives are OK email me and I’ll try calling them. We are currently getting 10 minute updates on which roads are closed - if you’d like to email me about the general area in which you relatives live I can tell you whether or not the roads in that region are closed.

The earlier thread started by TLD in the Pit, for more info.

Just to add: my hopes and thoughts are with you, cousins of mine across the water. There’s already a guy from Nelson, down in the South Island, over there piloting one of the skycranes dumping water on the blazes.

What affects one part of our wide-spread region, matters to us all.

Peace and safety.

The RTA website has up-to-date information on road closures as well.

Hope everyone is ok.

I don’t happen to have their number, but thank you for the offer reprise. I know if I call up my Mom and ask she’ll probably know through the family grapevine as it’s her brother.

Last year I know they were packed up and ready to go if the fires got any closer. If the roads were closed they even had the kayaks ready to go (they rent them out, teach people to kayak etc) All I remember is they live in New South Wales… Abbotsford I believe.

If they are in Abbotsford, that’s an inner west suburb of Sydney (about 2km from here) and are a long way from the current troubles.

Thanks wolfie. I haven’t been online for days and so missed TLD’s thread. FTR, the road closures are pretty much changing hour by hour according to the wind. It’s dead still here at the moment, after a day of about 80kph winds. I’m just hoping that it’s equally still in the fire zones.
