I noticed recently that in the English language, there are a not-insignificant number of two-syllable words which are nouns if you emphasize their first syllable, but verbs if you emphasize their second syllable. Right off the bat I can think of “object”, “project”, and “rebel”. Is there a name for this phenomenon, where stress determines the part of speech? And does it exist in any other language?
