"system32 error" prevents software install

I got a system32 error message today when attempting to install software on my PC to run an electronic device.

I have not gotten any such messages installing any other software recently, and the PC starts up and runs OK (if not as speedily as I would like). I ran the Windows disk cleanup utility without any effect other than to free up some space. Anti-malware and firewall have been running.

My question is - is there some problem with my PC that needs fixing, or should I first suspect the product software? If it’s the former, are there any reliable cheep fixes that are downloadable (there are various products advertised to “clean” your PC of system32-related troubles, but I’d rather not compound the problem with ineffective or malware-infested cleanup products).

Reboot your computer. When you are rebooting your computer, press the F8 key during the booting process and do that until you are actually in the boot menu. Then, you select the boot using last known good configuration option and your computer will then try to set up using the best configuration.

If that doesn’t work try the Windows System Restore tool. Pick a point before the time that you attempted to install the software.

What is the exact text of the error message? At what point does it appear in the installation process? Which version of Windows are you using?

and whats the device/software.

Is the device compatible with your version of windows? 64 bit versions?

The software, windows version, device, and exact error message (not paraphrased) will tell us where to start looking

You could have just said…“I don’t know”

running in safe mode disables many services the device may depend on. As well as windows installer services under some circumstances.

Suggestions appreciated.

As it turned out, I needed to right click and do the install as an admin. From then on it worked fine.
