I did a search and didn’t find this topic posted, so here goes. Mods, if the reactions to this news are hot enough, feel free to move this to the Pit. People have had money stolen from their bank accounts due to this, so read on.
In Canada, HomeGoods and Winners are apparently part of the chain; I’ve seen news reports on this issue, but so far, no reports of it actually having an effect on any individual consumers.
The Globe and Mail may be reporting that, but none of the banks or Visa have confirmed it - in fact they say the contrary, as seen in the opening paragraphs of the linked article:
Perhaps the G&M meant that thousands of Canadian customers have had the security of their cards compromised?
Credit card fraud and stealing money via stolen bank account information are two different things. I’m thinking that since debit card/checking information was also stolen that they could access bank accounts with the info? Check not only your credit cards, but your bank balances as well!
In Canada, debit card transactions are not handled by credit card companies, they are handled by a separate network that is maintained through a partnership of Canadian banks, called Interac (No “t”). I guess you could say that the Interac system is parallel to the credit card system; most machines where you can use Interac also accept CCs.
Of course it is prudent that Canadians keep an eye on their CC bills and bank statements; but that’s good practice anyway.
