[T-shirt Design] Ed, please answer this question.

I dunno. I think Cecil’s already in enough trouble with the Chicago chief of police for the word “dope” in the logo.
I wonder, would having the word “dope” on one’s t-shirt be probable cause in Chicago for a cavity search? One can only hope, huh?

“I want it to say ‘The Straight Dope’ on the front.”

There’s the problem.

So does most everyone willing to fork over money for a t shirt. Why is that too much to ask? No one knows, don’t bother asking, it’s been done.

They don’t want any use of copyrighted material. Again, no explanation offered. This moves us into the realm of the nonsensical.

Is it any wonder enthusiasm waned?

That has not been determined:

See above.

It is to me.

I would venture that there are a lot of members who haven’t looked at this thread.
The other t-shirt sold out of L and XL sizes. So an initial new design offering in just these two sizes might work.

What exactly is copyrighted about the logo? I read that we can use the words ‘The Straight Dope’ (or as that misinformation?). So what about 'Fighting Ignorance Since 1973 (It’s taking longer than we thought). Would using these two phrases together be not allowed? Or is it just the logo as a whole, the composite parts? Could you get around that by redesigning it, changing font, colours etc, yet still keep those words?

I can’t see how anyone can create a design that defines The Straight Dope without that logo. You can use all the memes you want, but I won’t be buying the shirt (unless it’s Cite? since I think that’s self explanatory, but I’m not a big fan of that). I’m not privy to most and I’m certainly not interested in explaining them to people. Explaining this website and all the useful people etc I’d like to, but I can’t see how without that damned logo.

SDMB on the front with the same font and colors as above.

On the back, an unnecessarily obtuse message:

**Hi Opal!
I was killed by a 1920s Style Death ray, once, in 1960, for 20 minutes.
Penis ensued.
**

My take on Lakai’s idea.

That’s pretty cool…not exactly my thing, but still I think it’s well-done.

That could work for some people. I was imagining a more dangerous (and realistic) looking syringe.

Do you know what the sight of even a picture of a realistic rig can do for some folks?
Imagine that you haven’t eaten for three days and you see a cheeseburger on TV.
At least that’s what I’ve heard.

I, for one, am curious as to what is taking so long?

May we, or may we not, use the logo, masthead etc in our tshirt design?

Yeah or nay?

I’ve pretty much decided to go ahead and get me a fox news t-shirt instead.

Stamp your foot.

What, like one of those horses that know how to count?

Nobody that I know of is stopping your from linking to a proposed logo. It’s just that The Evil Powers That Be want final approval before their intellectual property is plastered on an item for commercial purposes. In the absolute worst case, they might request that a poster remove the logo from their flikr account. Incidentally, adapting the logo for a tshirt isn’t completely straightforward: some resizing of the fonts seems necessary.

Proposal: use the back of the existing T reproduced here, and have a design contest for the front. So far the winner seems to be PlainJane, but I’d welcome a longer ballot.

Here are a few possibilities for the front of the T, courtesy of the mad pen of Slug Signorino.

Oh yeah. Could we downplay the phrase “Straight Dope” on the Tshirt? It tends to give people the wrong impression. When I refer to the board, I typically call it, “Cecil Adams’ board.”

Talking about the enthusiasm over the shirt…I figure that one I threw out all my ideas, I don’t have anything more to say and just decided to play the waiting game. I check this thread a lot, I like to see what is going on here, but overall I don’t really see the point in talking about it every fifteen seconds.

Obviously I think my own ideas are good (why else would I have said them ya know?), but the ones people are suggesting as well are pretty awesome. Mainly, we just need someone to say “damn it I’m gonna do it” and just…do it.

This poorly written poem should be stricken from the boards. It’s a public slap-in-the-face to Slug and I can’t believe YOU MODS would stand for it. This is ridiculous.

That’s the problem with not only the boards, but the entire magazine. Only few truly appreciate Slug’s work and respect him as a human being. All the rest of you bastards who are caught-up on his “schoolboy” style and “pseudonym” name should realize that Slug has accomplished more in his life, than all of you computer geeks combined.

Slug doesn’t like you either Musicat. I hope one day a bird shits in your eye.

                                                  Cheers.
