To answer a half-dozen half-questions and semi-inquiries, I did the two posts (the ones that look like t?sti? f?n and etc) using
a) a specialized keyboard layout, IPA-SIL, which remaps the keys to characters some of which are not part of standard ASCII but are all supposed to be part of the Unicode character set; and
b) referencing a specific font, Doulos SIL, which has IPA symbols in places where other fonts have very different characters; and
c) in the third post, remembering to surround my text with font=“Doulos SIL” (in square brackets) and /font on the end also in square brackets. (I forgot that step in the first post, not that it helped much).
It might be entirely possible to enter those same Unicode characters using entry protocols more acceptable to vBulletin (e.g., I might see the intended characters even if no one without the font would also see them), but entering them in the same manner I use to enter them in TextEdit flat-out didn’t work.
Oh, and when I first typed them in, I saw what I had intended; it was the act of posting that swapped out many characters for “?”.
(It was an “idle curiosity post” anyhow, since I knew that no one without Doulos SIL font would see the characters as intended, and it’s not like virtually everyone has that in their fonts folder).

AHunter: Your post is valid UTF-8. If it wasn’t, the eths, thorns, and ligatures wouldn’t come through. The problem with some characters being replaced with question marks is at your end. If the codepoints were being shipped out correctly, anyone on this end without the proper fonts would see boxes. That’s the standard way for a Unicode device to tell you it’s given up trying to show you what it should, and it’s a widely-followed standard.
They should make up another name for it; I mean, if I say the wheel on my unicycle is broken, you shouldn’t have to ask me “which one?”.
