Excellent, but I still prefer the original. I wonder whether Brubeck has heard it and what his opinion would be. (Yes he’s still alive . . . over 90 now.)
My bet is he would dig it on several levels. TCM had a special on Dave just the other day and he’s all for other cultures’ acceptance of and experimentation on jazz and music in general.
I really liked the sitar standing in for the sax, but the string section was way too much. Might have worked better if they’d cut about two thirds of the guys out, but with that many, it comes off sounding over-produced and corny. Too much John Williams, not enough jazz.
Loved the sitar solo parts, that guy really “dug” the groove (for all us old-timers) and that sounded perfect. I also didn’t think the overproduced-sounding string parts fit in too well with the rest of the song, but it was really cool to see all those surgeons able to get together between operations and have something to do.
Odd. I found the Rolling Stones version of Jumpin’s Jack Flash to be noisy. Different strokes, I guess.
Thanks for the link - that was great. I had a bad impression of the sitar because of the Beatles songs that include it (I always skip over them), but it was used very nicely here.
Something about the twangyness of the sound makes my fingernails itch.
