talk to me about Yoga for Men

First the disclaimers…
Yes I know that yoga doesn’t have to be gender specific.
I have taken yoga classes; but I’ve either forgotten everything or never learned anything beyond beginner stuff.

Ok, here’s the deal. I stumbled across some video the other day that ultimately led me down a path where someone was touting the benefits of DDP Yoga. I had never heard of it before; it turns out it’s a series of yoga products by pro wrestler Diamond Dallas Page. Further down my thread of looking into this, I discovered there’s a sub genre of yoga aimed towards men; or at the very least, yoga without the parts I don’t care for (namely the spirituality and the horrible headache-inducing “yoga” music). Now I have to admit this appeals to me. I like the idea of yoga; and I even enjoyed the classes I took, except the part I didn’t like was the whole lights-down-low, whispering tones, soothing voices.

Anyway, does anyone have any experiences with what I am calling yoga for men? Or perhaps it should be called Yoga without the mysticism. Also there are a couple of products specifically marketed to that type of yoga. One is the above mentioned DDP Yoga, and the other is Broga

I have DDP Yoga, I’ve gone through the full 13-week Beginner track so far.

I liked it. I have stopped for a bit as one of my wrists was hurting, when I start back up again I’ll see if it comes back, and if so, modify the push-up/table type stuff.

But it does seem to get my heart rate up in the more aerobic sections, and my 30-years-of-bad-sitting-posture back seemed to be doing better, so it seemed worthwhile.

Mind you, there probably are all sorts of free YouTube tutorials and whatnot out there that you could put together, but it was worth it to me to buy it and have a set progression program to follow. And I was like you–I wanted some Yoga, but without the “Namaste, now we worship the sun goddess” crap.

I did ignore all of the nutrition stuff in it. Looking at it, nothing seemed fundamentally wrong about it, maybe a little woo about organic and non-GMO stuff, but I just wasn’t needing to lose much in the way of weight. If you do, and you don’t know much about nutrition, it looked reasonable.

I have YRG, which is DDP Yoga’s predecessor. It is a good workout and seems low impact. I have heard DDP talk about diet and he seems to believe the anti-GMO woo but that is separate from the actual workout. The workout is all about strength, flexibility, and getting your heart rate up. When I heard former wrestler Lance Storm was doing DDP yoga that was the ultimate endorsement to me. There is none of the Indian mysticism on YRG.

My wrists used to hurt a lot with yoga - what helped was spreading my fingers really wide. It takes the weight off your wrists.

:bump:

Recent thread, so I thought I’d bump this instead of creating a new one.

OK, so I am a guy and this summer, I am attempting to lose weight through diet and exercise. Can one lose weight doing yoga? It just looks like stretching to me. I tried aerobics, but I honestly ache so badly in my knees and groin, I could not maintain a reasonable exercise. I thought yoga…might help.

Can any of you provide me a good youtube video of yoga that would work?

As someone who has lost a considerable amount of weight recently: Yoga probably won’t help. Aerobics probably won’t help. The thing that helps is eating less. It is far harder to work off 1000 Calories than it is to just not consume them in the first place.

Though anything that builds muscle mass will help some, since muscle consumes more calories even when you are just sitting on the couch. Get stronger, eat less. Win-win.

Yeah, I’m reducing diet and avoiding sugar as well.

Still, any good low impact yoga videos people can recommend?
