Tank suspensions aren’t all that tough.
A tanker told me recently that they’re trained not to go sideways across a steep hill, because the force of gravity could pull the road-wheels away from the tracks.
In San Diego, when a jackass stole a tank from a National Guard armory, he was stymied by a concrete freeway lane divider.
So, yeah, a “boot” such as in that pic would probably prevent the tank from moving. I you tried to force it, you’d likely throw the track. Remember that individual track links are held together by metal pins that aren’t all that large in size, and are far from unbreakable.
They actually can be remarkably tough considering the forces they are under. I’ve personally done some pretty amazing things without breaking the track. The big weakness is lateral forces tending to push the track out of place. That’s why the hills can be an issue; that can put tons of lateral force on the track.
I watched the stolen tank coverage live with a large group of experienced tankers. His issue was taking the divider at a shallow angle. Straight on he shouldn’t have had any issue with the track.
With a modern main battle tank I’m pretty sure the boot would not survive but the remnants might still cause issues with being mobile. Parked on pavement snapping the arm of the boot without causing serious damage shouldn’t be a big problem. I might screw up the roadwheel it’s connected to. If that was the only issue I should still be able to baby things as I drove away till I could replace it later.
That’s not a modern main battle tank though. It’s got less weight and less power to apply to the problem.
Yes, but chasing this down afterward is why people buy over-priced popcorn and soda. ![]()
when used as intended. Concrete is incredibly strong in compression, but try to stretch or bend it and it fractures almost instantly.
That’s one ballsy traffic warden.
How is that not Photoshopped? Why would they have a boot that fits a tank tread?
They are tough enough to support a 50 ton tank. Just not laterally. My guess is the tanks power train has enough toque to just snap the boot as if it weren’t there.
