TAO Tom Sawyer... Children's book, and nothing more?

Wondering about “The adventures of Tom Sawyer”… Did you guys find anything in it other than an adventure story for kids? I read it w/the intention of finding something mind-blowing. I was let down. What makes this such an american classic? Am I missing some sort of life-jolting message?

Twain did not write stories for children. All of his writing was aimed at adults.

What message were you expecting? It’s just a book.

heh, clever user name. However, something promoting nature, which I found a bit of, him being a romantic steamboatter and all…

What makes Tom Sawyer such an American classic is its sheer entertainment value and its numerous memorable, classic scenes. It’s just plain fun to read.

Tom Sawyer is the reflection of a boy, in an era.

While adventures are added, Tom is pretty close to life.

Huckleberry Finn carries a message so powerful you could drive tent pegs with it.

I also recommend The Innocents Abroad as a way to learn about the world of the 19th Century, & still have some fun doing it.

Innocents Abroad is a dangerous book. Besides the aching sides caused by raucous laughter, it instils a wanderlust that can get expensive.

Chapter 27, where they torment the guides has me gasping for breath.
