The difference in tape quality is in the size and density of the magnetic particles in the emulsion applied to the tape base during manufacture. Smaller, higher density particles should result in a superior product. Good quality tape also doesn’t skimp on the adhesive that binds the emulsion to the base.
High quality audio tape should be easy to recognize by its packaging: just look for type I,III or IV tape, usually with a description stating ferric, chrome or metal. Higher quality tape usually also lists an equalisation measurement as well.
High quality tape of the chrome or metal variety requires a different bias selection on your tape deck to acvhieve the best results. Most decks do this automatically these days, by sensing cut-outs on the edges of the cassette shell.
As far as video tape is concerned, I have never noticed whether the superior product is as readily identifiable as is audio tape.

Hi8 and S-VHS tapes have extra holes in the shell similar to the chrome and metal indicators in a Cassette shell. The difference between those tapes and standard tape is profound as they normally cannot be used in standard 8mm and VHS machines.
Thanks for illuminating me. As I don’t use high grade video tape (not having any equipment or reason to) I was not aware of the above.
Further to my original post, I should have added that chrome tape is better than ferric, and metal better than chrome. The prices rise similarly for each type.
In practice however, I have found that the best solution for me is chrome. The small improvement in sound quality over chrome does not justify the additional price premium one pays for metal tape. But the difference between ferric and chrome is readily audible.
