Tattoos, body piercings and plastic surgery: a poll

I hate tattoos. Especially on women. Not that I think they look good on men, they simply look less bad. It may seem shallow, but it is too the point that I would have a hard time being attracted to a girl that had a prominent tattoo. Even a small and discreet one would bother me, but I think that I would be able to live with it. I have very, very, rarely ever seen a tattoo that I thought complemented the wearer. Those were all abstract designs that flowed with the curves of the body and appeared natural, as if the person was born with the markings and they grew with them. However, I would be much less bothered if it was some sort of geek tattoo. I would still prefer that there was no tattoo at all, but some of those are pretty cool.

Piercings, I am not really bothered by, so long as they do not go beyond the ears or the bellybutton. Lips, eyebrows and such are a turn-off for me. Piercing of the nipples or genitals is a major turn off, and although they may not admit it, most guys will have less respect for a girl who has such decorations.

Cosmetic surgery, I don’t think I have any problem with that at all. I suppose that I don’t like it when a person has had numerous procedures done and acquired that sort of fake and plastic look, but outside of that rare occurrence I approve of it.

Although it should go without saying, I also feel that if you want to get a tattoo or an unusual piercing, more power to you. I just think that they are yucky and a big turn-off.

I don’t mind tatoos much, although I’m a bit annoyed at my son getting one. Fine for other people, but not for the 5078 family. It’s only marginally annoying, though.

I loathe body piercings. All body piercings. On anyone.

Plastic surgery is fine when one is scarred or in some other way disfigured. More than fine, actually; it ranges from desirable to necessary. As a sop for someone’s vanity and/or a way to stave off aging, though, I consider it pathetic. You’re getting older; get used to it.

For example, I would have a very hard time being attracted to her.

BTW, that came up while doing an image search for “cute” and “adorable”.

Come on, she wouldn’t be very attractive without any piercings or tattoos.
http://www.seventhsun.co.uk/nose.htm (warning one klick from genital piercings) shows how they can be detrimental or benifitial to someones looks.

My reaction:  Now that’s just fucked up!

I’m not sure whether it is fucked up, but I’m definitely sure that that’s my reaction. (Followed by, “You’ve gotta be from California, right?”) It’s just totally alien to my own way of thinking, the way I was raised, etc.

Since this is IMHO, here’s my HO: I, personally, would never get a tattoo or a piercing. Whatever other people want to do is totally their own business and I have no right to judge, but I have never ever personally found anyone more attractive or appealing because they had a tattoo or piercing than they would have been without it.

As for plastic surgery, I think reconstructive surgery after an accident, disease, etc. is a good thing, even though, when it comes right down to it, any kind of surgery kind of creeps me out. Other kinds, though, I think the world could get along just fine without, and in some cases, getting plastic surgery is even a sign of being emotionally unhealthy. (Case in point: Michael Jackson.) And when it comes to breast enhancement, well, personally I prefer real boobs of any size to fake ones.

No problem with tattoos or piercings, as long as you spare me the details of how you got them. I’m afraid of needles.

No problem at all with plastic surgery- I’d get liposuction if I could afford it.

Needles, you’re afraid of … but scalpels are fine? :dubious:  :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a small tattoo.

I sadly just lost a navel piercing recently to migration.

And God willing, I will marry a very generous plastic surgeon someday.

You and me both.

Paging Dr. Troy…

Yup. Three reasons:

  1. It’s a phobia, and those are (by definition) irrational, and can be very specific. I’d have a lot less trouble with someone drawing blood from me with a knife than with a needle. I’m aware that this is totally and completely irrational, but that’s just how my phobic brain works.

  2. They knock you out for surgery. They don’t for piercings or tattoos.

  3. For some reason, people don’t feel compelled to describe their plastic surgery experience in public and in great detail. Some people have no such reservations about telling me all the nauseating details about the needles involved in their tattoo or piercing. I don’t comment on people’s tattoos or piercings (and try not to obviously look at them) for this reason. I have decided that the next person who tells me a needle story is going to hear all about my grossest recent bowel movement in retaliation.

Anne, I was just kidding (hence the wink and raspberry smilies): one of my friends used to tease me because I’ll happily get a tattoo but don’t like the idea of getting pierced, so I get it.

That’s what Mary Tyler Moore did! And look at her now! She’s a walking advertisement for what you should never let someone do to your face.

Tatoos? For the most part, I don’t care, though the full-body ones are a bit much, in my opinion. My sister has 2, I have a couple friends who have them(one of which is a “Hello Cthulhu” one).

I have no desire to get one though. I’ve seen very few I like, and the ones I do like I wouldn’t want anyone to see.

Piercings? I have a friend who has peircing which doesn’t really bother me. Tounge piercings freak me out though, and so do lip piercings. And I’ve seen a couple extreme cases that are just disgusting(a guy shown on the daily show whose chin was heavily pierced).

No desire to get one, at all.

Plastic surgery? If you’ve got an injury or demformity, I have no problem. If half your face is torn up or something, go for it. Liposuction, if you’ve got no other choice(but I do wonder how many people get liposuction and end up putting the weight right back on). Most other cosmetic stuff just seems vain, as well as looking freaky.

Greta Van Sustran is enough for me to think Botox is creepy, forever.

My Eyes! The googles do nothing!

There was a woman on a talk show one time who got her stomach, butt, and legs all lipo’d and wound up gaining back all the weight in her ARMS. Lipo kills the fat cells, so you can’t gain back the weight in places where you’ve been sucked. She looked like a cartoon character.

I thought liposuction removed fat cells, not killed them?

Once a fat cell is removed, it can no longer store fat, because it is out of your body. It’s basically like killing it. Granted, humans have millions of fat cells, but the woman on the show went to a shady doctor (that was the topic of the show) who removed/killed damn near every one of them.

Generous and GORGEOUS!

I have two tattoos and plan on getting two more when I’m more financially secure. Right now, I only have two holes in my ears and my belly button pierced, though I have had many more in the past. Most of them I just took out for jobs.

I like the look of both, though I don’t like excessive facial piercings that hide a person’s face rather than flatter it.

As far as plastic surgery goes, I’d probably never do it barring any kind of accident in the future. The only things I’d change about my appearance is my weight and I’d have better skin, but those things can be changed without knives. I don’t mind it on other people, but like facial piercings, too much just looks bad. A well done nose-job can make a person look better, as long as they don’t get the same nose as everyone in Hollywood seems to have gotten. Anything done that doesn’t “go” with the rest of your frame won’t look good to me, like a tiny thin woman with DDD’s or a man with a nice, strong face and a nose that’s too skinny and straight to match it.
