I heard a conversation about tattoos/piercings on the radio, and a twenty-something called to say that every single person she knows in her age group has a tattoo, piercing, or both. So, this prompted me to wonder…is it really that common? Or is it her group of friends? What about other age groups? So, please share…how old are you, and how many tattoos/piercings do you have?
In the interest of full disclosure…I am 39, and I have my ears pierced (one lobe has one hole, one lobe has 2), and that is it.
Four years I got my one and only tattoo, my school’s mascot on my upper right bicep to celebrate their national championship. None of my other friends in this age group have tats.
I have no tattoos or piercings more interesting than my earlobes (one left, two right).
Sometimes I’d like to get more, but I look at it as like getting a husband: I don’t want to get something I’m going to grow to hate and have to have surgically removed.
30 here, and I have both ears pierced three times each, but I don’t wear anything in the top hole and it may have closed for all I know. Also, my nose is pierced. (I am E. Indian so it’s part of my cultural heritage. I always like to point that out to make it clear it wasn’t a fad. :))
3, soon to be four guys living in my house, all have one or more tattoo and/or piercing. (Two have tattoos, three have piercings). I can only think of two of my friends who don’t have either.
I have zero piercings and zero tattoos, and in the subculture to which I belong, that makes me very, very weird. At 32, it’s to the point where I feel as though I’m treasuring my skin’s virginity. Having no tats and no piercings makes me an aberration.

1 in left helix (the rim of the ear)
1 in left scapha (flat piece of cartilage, top of the ear)
1 in the right tragus (the triangle shaped bit of cartilage directly in front of the ear canal)
1 in the tongue
The second tragus and possibly matching helix and scapha piercings will likely follow.
I’m 43 and have had my ears pierced since I was 12. About 10 years ago I got one cartilege pierced and then a second hole in one of my lobes. That’s it. At one time I thought I might get a tattoo, but never could figure out something I’d want to look at forever. So I didn’t and I’m glad. I think, now, that I’d just look tacky.
A know quite a few women my age who have gotten tattoos – the rose on the shoulder, the dolphin on the ankle. If they enjoy them, fine. I’m getting to the age where we live to make ourselves happy and the hell with what anyone else thinks!
I’m 47, female and have two ear piercings in each ear, but I usually just wear one earring in each. I also have a tattoo on my right shoulder of a scorpion with a rose in its claw - I’m a Scorpio. I got the tattoo for a Xmas present to myself in 2003.
My husband has no tats or piercings. He’s 51.
My son has a “jailhouse” tattoo around his bicep. (I wish he hadn’t gotten that one.) He also has pierced ears, but isn’t wearing studs at the moment. He’s 22.
My dad, who was in the navy in WWII, has no tattoos. He’s 82.
38, male, two holes left earlobe, one right, one tattoo on each upper arm.
Work in a very corporate environment so keep it all discreet. One of my directors lives round the corner from my new house, though, so I suspect she’ll see me in a less corporate state of dishevelment at some point in the future.
41, male, 3 tattoos. An Eye of Horus by my left shoulder blade, a Hammer of Thor on my right upper arm, and an ankh below my left collar bone. The largest is 4 inches high. All of them are completely concealed by a short-sleeved shirt, so they don’t show in the corporate world. I got my first one when I was 33, after contemplating it for 5 years.
Interestingly enough, it’s the females in my circle of friends who tend to be tattooed and the males who tend to be without.
I have three holes in each earlobe, which I never wear jewelry in. As it turns out, I am not a fan of piercings. I also have two tattoos, a kanji symbol (which will be covered up eventually as it is misappropriative) on my hip and a typewriter on my ankle. I definitely want to get more tattoos, but I want to ruminate over designs a little more so I don’t make a mistake like my first one. (I love my second one.)
Female, 24. And most of my friends don’t have tattoos or piercings.
Have one tatoo, a sleeping sun. Got it a year ago at age 29 in celebration of my divorce. The ex husband was very much opposed to me getting a tattoo and I’ve wanted one since I was 18.
I did pierce my belly button when I was 21 but let that close when I got pregnant with my daughter.
Other than that, just my ears are pierced and I rarely wear earrings.
I do have two holes in each ear, I used to have one at the top of one ear but it has long since grown over. The only piece of jewlery I still wear is my belly ring, but nobody sees that one anymore. Well one other person sees it, but oddly enough as the age grows the urge to show off a belly ring shrinks.

have considered getting a tatto, but i’m too much of a needle wimp. (i had topical anesthetic for the ear piercings) so, i stick with henna designs for my arms/hands.
I have no piercings, though my cat keeps trying to give me one. I have no intentional tattoos. I had a simple accidental tattoo for ten years. I had a small injury in the factory, and when the scabs came off, I had a small red spot. It finally came out, and it was a small piece of red plastic from a tail light.
