Really? O well. I’ve only seen the one, so I thought it was kinda unique.
A few months ago a young fellow (20-21 years old) I met was showing off the huge new “Korn” tattoo he’d just gotten on his forearm. Getting a tattoo of the name of a band? Gee, that oughtta look awful cool ten years from now…
Phase42: Yeah, I laughed the first couple times I saw it. But I can’t imagine getting a joke tattoo - I mean, do you know any jokes that are still funny the 100th time you hear it? Why etch one into your skin?
My tattoo is just above my tailbone. (around navel height, I guess)
I got it there cause it’s the only place that
a) won’t stretch too much if I get fat or pregnant
b) will never be visible unless I want it to be, no matter what I’m wearing. (okay, except a bathing suit)
I once knew a guy who got a tattoo of a rooster in a noose on his calf. That way he could tell people he had a cock that hung below his knee.
I was gonna mention those! I dont particularly like 'em either, and nearly all of the time it does, indeed, mar the aesthetic appeal. But sometimes it at the same time it increases their attractiveness, if they are a marginally “wild and crazy”-seeming person. But on an introvert it looks weird and on an already out there person it doesnt add to the idiosyncratic exotic attraction.
I am not a fan of tattoos in general and certainly more is not better.
I work with a girl who has the DNA helix tatooed going up her spine starting above her tailbone. Personally, I think it’s totally cool - not only is the shape of it flattering to spine shape, but it’s something unusual that has meaning to her - FWIW I work on a scientific research floor.
I’m a girl, and in general I think tatoos are fine - big nasty “BIKE TO HELL” ones with a skeleton on a motorcycle are somewhat less appealing.
Can I just offer this one piece of advice to any girl seeking a tattoo in the next few years?
Ahem.
If you have tribal art tattooed on the small of your back because you think it looks cool, you are officially a douche.
The good news is, you will have LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of company.
Very sexy!
But, not words.
My problem with tattoos are aesthetic, not moral (I don’t think tattoos make people look like “white trash,” unless it’s a skull with flames coming out of its eyes).
My caveats are:
-
Most people do not have good taste. I have a few friends (hi, Oxy!) with tasteful, artistically interesting tattoos. But, look at your friends’ choices in, say, artwork. Clothes. TV shows. Favorite movies. Now, what’s the chance of them choosing a tattoo that’s not gag-inducing?

Permanence. Can you imagine wearing the same pair of earrings for the next 50 years? The same pair of shoes, or same color of lipstick? Then why on earth would you choose the most permanent of accessories, one that you may very well be sick to death of in a year or two or five? Get a temporary tattoo.
Well, since you asked for it, here’s one guy’s opinion: tattoos are never an improvement over bare skin. They range from looking downright ugly to just out-of-place. They spoil the beauty of a bare leg or back or whatever. And the fact that they’re permenant creeps me out.
But of course, it’s a matter of taste.
I personally think they detract from the natural beauty of the female body, but hey it’s your body, your right, your choice.
I’m a 34 year old woman and I got my one & only tattoo a couple of years ago - I wouldn’t say it has a lot of meaning per se, but it’s very pretty and it’s in a very private place (right over my sternum). I wanted it there because I get to choose who sees it and who doesn’t (unless I’m wearing a really low cut top).
Every guy I know who has seen it or just been told about it, thinks it’s very sexy and cool.
I’m a 32-year-old male and I love just about any tattoo anywhere on a woman. The more, the merrier! Yes, even those freakish women covered from head to toe look good to me, but any ink is good ink. I don’t have any myself, nor do I have any piercings, but I love 'em on women.
Male Speaking: I personally dont lie tattoos. the reason is that they are permanent, and I can’t decide on any thing that will be permanently cool. On women, small, discreet ones are ok, but not the large ones.
I have been wearing the same earrings for 9 years, and still have and wear shoes I bought in high school.
I am not a girly-girl. I like my tattoos. Each of them is somewhere they can be covered up if they need to be. I love each and every one of them. They all mean something to me.
Tattoos on girls are definitely hot. Especially the ones on the lower back. As for too many… it depends. Personally I’m not a big fan on full sleeve tattoos on women… (or men either, for that matter) but some people can pull it off.
There was a tattoo parlor a few doors down from the last restaurant I cooked in. One of our regular customers, a nearly 70-year-old woman, just for the hell of it, trotted on down there. She came back a couple hours later with a small portrait of Tom Jones tattooed on her calf. It was her very first tattoo - she really thought it was a hoot
I have just one. Fairly small, inconspicuous, and very meaningful to me. I may get a second one, but I’m being very picky about what I’m going to get and where I’m going to get it. Tattoos are very personal, IMO. They reflect the person wearing them. Remember that you’re going to have to stick with this choice; it’s permanent.
Best part about my tat: my sweetie thinks it’s sexy as all hell.
