I need to consult a tax accountant in the US without having to drag my behind all the way there. Is there any firm that specializes in tax for foreigners living abroad and that can be consulted online?
Is there a U.S. bank w/ a branch where you are? If so, they may be able to help.
No, but I have accounts in US banks. I don’t think they will be of much help though.
I’m assuming you’re a U.S. citizen living in the caribbean. With all the expats around the world there must be someone doing tax advice online. Send some inquiries to some CPA firms to see if they can help, or give you a referral. You might check w/ the consul gen.'s office to see if they can steer you in the right direction.
No. I am not a US citizen. I don’t live in the US and never have and almost certainly never will. I just have some assets in the US and will have some income that *might *be taxable. I need advice on a)whether I have to pay taxes on that income, and b)how to go about that.
Sorry, I should know better than to assume. I still think that a U.S. Embassy, or U.S. Consul Gen.'s office could help you, or a U.S. CPA firm. You could also go to the IRS web site to search for an answer, or send them the question, although it’s rumored that their accuracy record is considerably less than 100%.
Never mind. I always forget to tell people where I come from.
Anyways, I am loath to call the IRS. Seems like asking the enemy.
It’s not a lot of money, but if I have learnt anything from movies and TV is to not f%$¡¿ with the IRS.
Paging DiosaBellissima Paging DiosaBellissima.
she works for a tax firm here in the states. You might send her a PM or e mail.
This company seem to have a pretty good handle on how to answer your question.
I found an Acceptance Agent in the Dominican Rep. when searching in the IRS website. The good news: it is within walking distance to my house. The bad news: they are not listed in the phone book and I don’t know how old that listing in irs.gov is.
I might stop by tomorrow. I don’t know what an Acceptance Agent is though, so it might not be of help.
Non-resident aliens have the same $3,300.00 personal deduction as U.S. citizens, but I’m not sure exactly what “non-resident alien” means.
I am an non-resident alien.
An hour of searching on the net bore the telephone and details of said Acceptance Agent. I called them and made an appointment for Monday.
Regardless of how much of my income is exempted, if any, I am guessing I’ll still have to file taxes. It’s the same here.
This is probably true.
