Tax requirements for a contractor on 1099-MISC

Thanks to all for the excellent and helpful information.

Just to illuminate a bit, this is a girls’ modeling “camp,” more like charm school than summer camp. My daughter was a camper a few years ago and the owner asked her to come back as a counselor this summer. It rents space in a local hotel to conduct the sessions. So it’s not a big camp with lots of counselors and tons of kids applying for the job. Here’s the site with a broken link. Remove *all *of the spaces. It is perfectly SFW but I don’t want a search for that camp to lead to this thread.

I don’t like what the owner is doing but I also want to let my daughter finish out her three weeks without rocking the boat. Once she’s done I wouldn’t mind reporting the situation, but then that’s like finishing your meal then telling the waiter how bad it was.

Also, there is no overtime involved, she works a little less than 40 hours per week.

She also has the other job as a regular employee, but no other employment.

Just a quick update if anyone’s interested, it turned out that they intended for her to be an employee and mistakenly asked her to fill out the contractor agreement. She got her first paycheck and it treats her as an employee.

I’m happy to hear that! I hate to think of employers taking advantage of young workers.
