Tax software questions/recommendations

This year I cannot use Turbotax.

Does any tax preparation software exist that isn’t online (loading my info to their servers)? In the past, I could buy a Turbotax disk and install it on my home PC. Now, I must use my turbotax account to download or buy their software, so it’s unavailable* to me.

I’m looking for tax software (free or not) which I can install on my home PC and use. I do not want to upload all my info to a provider’s web portal, nor do I want to open an account with them. Does any tax software like this exist still?

Thanks for any suggestions.

*I apparently have a Turbotax account, but cannot remember user id or password. The account signin is required to use their software, or even to buy it. All the efforts of their help desk, and my explorations throughout the website cannot produce my user id. AFAICT, there is no way to access my account without knowing one of the two items. I’ve given up and decided to move on.

ProPublica recently provided this resource for free filing of taxes (specifically vs. Turbo Tax’s ‘gotcha’ traps). Perhaps one will work for you.

When TurboTax hiked the price for Schedule C support, we start with H&R Block, which has worked fine for us. All on our PC.
We kind of have an account with them to get updates and the like, but none of our information is on their servers. We just upload the finished tax form when we’re done.
