Taxes, homestead and voter registration

I live in Austin, Texas (Travis County) and claim my house here as my homestead for tax purposes. I am also registered to vote here.

I’m restoring a house in Calvert, Texas (Robertson County) which I will probably turn into a bed and breakfast.

The issues facing Calvert are much more important to me than the issues facing Austin so I would like to change my voter registration to Calvert, but I’m not sure what the legalities would be or what the tax implications would be. Can anyone help me out here?

What? You’re not interested in the myriad of issues facing Austin. Austin is the home of democracy in action, with a new election nearly every month! And, if the voters get an election wrong, don’t worry, you’ll get a chance to vote again and again until you get it right. If you don’t believe me, check out that beautful airport voters approved out near Manor.

But seriously, as far as I know, you have to actually live where you vote. However, when I was in college, I lived in San Marcos, but voted in Austin. Officially, I still lived with my parents.

Drum God - Native Austinite now living out in the country.

I’m going to take a stab at answering my own question here.

I just spoke to the Travis County voter registration office, and they assured me that you can vote in a county other that where your homestead is. You have to “live” in that county, but their definition of “live” is pretty broad. You don’t have to own property in that county, and you can even claim a vacant lot as your place of residence.
