Taxi or car service from Manhattan to JFK?

My daughter will be visiting NYC and will need to get from JFK to her hotel in downtown Manhattan and then days later from Lincoln Center to JFK.

I’m thinking she should get on a SuperShuttle van for $20 from JFK to her hotel since it’s not critical she get to the hotel by a certain time. But leaving NYC I think she should get a car service to take her to the airport. This will run about $100 including tip but since she has a plane to catch it’s critical she get there on time.

Any opinions whether catching a taxi on the street would be a better way to get to JFK? I’ve been in NYC where flagging down a taxi wasn’t too easy.

The LIRR from Penn to Jamaica station takes 20 minutes and is significantly cheaper, and runs about every 5-15 minutes during the day.

Thanks for the idea. Her time is real tight when leaving Lincoln Center for JFK so I’m thinking that finding her way to Penn Station and then taking a train might not get her to the airport on time. How do you get from Jamaica Station to JFK?

Airtrain.

The $5 AirTrain connects Jamaica to the terminals. I only mention it as an option since a car service or taxi will be affected by traffic but the train won’t be.

AirTrain. It goes straight there on dedicated track, you get it right in the LIRR station with huge signs pointing the way. Or she could ask anyone. Cost is $5

 Just ran a car service quote, Lincoln Center to JFK, single person, two pieces of luggage, 1 pm on a Thursday. Base single-car quote from two major providers was $52 plus tips and tolls.

What they said - AirTrain, for an additional $5 fare, transfer upstairs at Jamaica Station.

How tight is the time window?

BTW, the 7th Ave subway line (1, 2, 3) connects Lincoln Center straight to Penn Station. Four stops on the local from 66th St to 34th.

That’s great - I saw $70 for a one-way trip, added a tip, and just rounded up. She’ll leave Lincoln Center at 2:30pm for a 5:00pm flight.

Hmm, right, that’s kind of tight considering the possible unpredictability of traffic. Which would also affect how quickly to get to Penn Station to use the train connection, I would not want to get on any later departure than the 2:57 (LIRR/Airtrain connection puts you at the terminal 45 min to an hour after departure, depending on connecting time and terminal). Driving time would be IIRC about 45 min under optimal conditions, an hour more likely as long as no serious back-up is in the way.

(Whichever the mode I actually use I myself prefer to start in motion towards JFK NLT 3 hours before flight time)

We went with a car service to get back to the airport. Family trip, 6 of us, each with a week worth of luggage, so we had to request a large SUV. Picked up at the hotel door, let off at the terminal, minimal luggage schlepping and still was only abot $75 - tip included. We were in the Jamaica area, not Midtown so pricing could be a bit different, but I found it well worth it (did I mention minimal luggage schlepping?).
